One last point, by prolonged use of these products , euthymol and Rembrandt you are going to wear away the enamel making the tooth more porous and eventually revealing the yellow dentine underneath. Not only is dentine very sensitive it also picks up stain more than enamel. You are then looking,at the least, at White fillings to repair the damage , which pick up stains easily.
Talk to your dentist about your choices of toothpaste and brushing habits as together ,long term , you will have damage. Add drinking fruit juices/smoothies/fizzy drinks and the acid will accelerate the damage.

Only use a stain removal toothpaste such as euthymol or rembrandt /pearl drops etc no more than once a week if you must.

Rarely drink juice or smoothies & the only fizzy drink I drink is fizzy water.

    Rembrante does;)

No, it doesn't. You have a number of dentists here telling you the same thing. It might be worth taking the free advice!

    Are they lying?

I make a point of using a floride toothpaste because Euthymol doesn't contain it;)

Sorry I can't see the irefutable scientific proof that this product does change the colour of the enamel from that advert! Toothpastes do not whiten teeth. They have been shown to be ineffective in that, as you need a certain level of hydrogen peroxide to do it. They may have a role in the removal of topical stain, but more likely are just thinning your enamel. If I think on when I'm back in the surgery on Thursday I'll find you a proper scientific paper on it.

Fluoride is always useful to have in toothpaste! It probably is able to slowly and inefficiently remove some extrinsic (surface) stain. But the amount of peroxide it contains is insufficient to remove intrinsic stain. That's what whitens teeth :)
There are some quite grim pictures at work of people who have overdone the abrasive toothpastes in the aim of whitening their teeth.

Yes the euthymol and Rembrandt remove staining, they also remove enamel especially as you are brushing several times with different tooth pastes each time. Here is a recent American article about the dangers of using these products nb euthymol is a very abrasive toothpaste http://www.latimes.com/health/la-he-skeptic-whitening-toothpaste-20110704,0,3488517.story.

You may like the results now but what does your dentist say about your regime ,and more importantly are you prepared for the damage that will become evident in the next few years from this very abrasive cleaning regime?

So, with two weeks to go until my holiday, is there a product I can safely use, for a short while to brighten up my teeth a bit? My main vice (tooth-staining-wise anyway!) would be one strong cup of coffee each day.

At the moment I use Sensodyne Gum Protection as my regular toothpaste (because I thought it might be good for my gums...I don't have sensitive teeth) . My middle-aged teeth look ok to me; just that "normal" looks dull compared to the dazzling smiles around today!

Not expecting miracles, but can anyone advise would one of the products mentioned make a modest difference if I used them for a short period, without causing damage? If so, which would be best?

Thanks. :D (...with a dazzling smiley!)

With two weeks to go to a holiday, the best thing you could do to cheer your teeth up, would be to try and get an appointment with the hygienist at your dental practice for a nice clean and polish.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
