travelling on maiden name - passport

Hi does anyone know whether I have to change my passport to my married name in order to use it for travel? eg can a passport be valid if it shows my maiden name.. I assume I'd have to ensure my flight tickets etc were in my maiden name as well or else they wouldn't match etc. thanks

You can travel on your passport in your maiden name as long as it matches the name on your tickets.
How long has it got left till it expires.

My passport is practically the only thing I have left in my maiden name since I got married last year. Just haven't got round to changing it yet. Downside is that I have to remember to book airline tickets in my maiden name

oh ok that sounds good, I wasn't happy to change my passport at full price especially when I have a few years to go on it...

make sure your travel insurance is in your maiden name as well otherwise it's useless

Are you sure about this? I know that insurance companies will do all that they can to wriggle out of a claim but, if you can prove that Miss Smith and Mrs Jones are the same person (DOB and marriage cert should do it), then it would be a very difficult position for them to defend in court.

Do any travel agents wish to comment?

I have annual travel insurance taken out in my name now but won't expire until next year after I'm married. So at some point something won't match. I think if you told the insurance company what the situation is it'll be just an admin change to make sure cover isn't affected

The only time it could be a problem is countries where hotels don't accept unmarried couples because of the law. Having different surnames on passports may be difficult to explain.

There are several European countries alone where the wife doesn't take the husband's name (notably Spain & Iceland). I doubt if anywhere in the world is pedantic enough to care if the names match.

As for OP - the main requirement is that passport & tickets have the same name on them and it's a good idea to ensure that the name on the passport is the same as on the insurance, credit cards etc just in case you are required to produce proof of ID.
