    Further update:
He went in and took them their five pounds and was informed by one of his now former managers that he would be "billed for the cost of the investigation".

What exactly these costs are were undefined, be it travel costs of managers from other stores that came to the disciplinary or the ink in the pens that were used to make notes, who knows.

I presume it's some ruse to make deductions from his final salary and accrued holidays.

In response to the previous posters, yes there was cctv evidence and he saw it himself and confirmed it was him and the of the two officers that visited him, one was regular old bill the other was a PCSO.

Must've been a BIG piece of chocolate then

Seems really OTT of the shop - sacking, involving the police, asking for costs, etc. Maybe they've had a problem with theft in the past and want to make an example of someone? Seems a bit unfair.

I hope it won't go against him too much in looking for a new job. Does seem ridiculously OTT, especially since it was put out to go to waste anyway. Having seen how much food is thrown away by shops when it is still perfectly edible I don't see this as such a big issue myself. It's not like it was taken off the shop floor and eaten. It's just a shame the CCTV caught it.

How ridiculous. Just shows what very poor management they have if they can't deal with this minor issue themselves. Wasting tax-payers money and preventing the police dealing with more serious crime.

Perhaps there is some "previous" between them and the OP's BIL that has influenced the matter.

I won't be shopping in ALNATMA again.

Could have been sent back to the supplier for a credit but because it has been eaten is not valid for all we know.

Would I have sacked him.....yes, would I have reported it to the police....No.

Actually I was going to say, it could be going back to supplier or to do with insurance.

If anything I stock is damaged in transit or when it arrives I have to keep it as is if I want credit from wholesalers. Usually if it is rice though I just tape up the package and discount it then put the discounted cost into the takings box and use it myself. Then again I have 1 little stall once a month not a many stored business.

Oh dear me ... talk about an over-reaction :o to an over-reaction! So what you're saying is someones' bil in virtual world was sacked for theft (that he admitted) and because the store followed it up to the letter of the law you're no longer going to shop there!

That's nuts (dunno if the chocolate was though) :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Totally agree - over-reaction on part of the store was phenomenal but maybe that's their policy as if the employees sign up to that as part of their T&C's hardly fair to complain afterwards. Hopefully bil learnt lesson and can find work elsewhere but be more thoughtful in future.

I did post earlier in the thread mentioning this may happen as it's pretty standard in the retail trade, the bill for a bar of chocolate from previous experiences dealing with theft by an employee (although not with the company mentioned) would usually be around £150 but closer to £200 after investigation has been completed.

They are dealing with the situation in exactly the right way, they had an employee that decided to eat some of their stock, where the stock was destined for is not relevant, if they caught a shoplifter they would report it to the police exactly the same and possibly go through civil recovery with them, the fact it is a employee that is stealing complicates things a little more as they now need to investigate if the employee has stolen before, these things tend not to be a one off thing, if you have a thief as an employee it's reasonable to assume they have been stealing on more than one occasion not just the one spotted on cctv.
