Can I/should I be able to get a refund?

ok. So have a Nokia 5310 xpress music phone locked to Orange.

After weeks I finally got my unlocking code (from Orange legally, paid my £20) only.... it didn't work! :-(

So, I rang them back up and of cause they are saying it's the phone's (Nokia) fault. Faulty phone.

Well, I don't want to send my phone to Newcastle for them to unlock, it's still working as I only tried the code 2-3 times so now I'm just wanting to give up and get my £20 back.

Orange refusing now. Said I could take it to Carphonewarehouse and get them to try unlocking it. Went to my local they said even if I went to one that had the equiptment (miles away) it would cost about the same to unlock as buying a new phone! Though Orange said if they managed it I could call them and get back the £20 I'd paid them.

So, how can/do I get Orange to just forget the unlocking and give me my money back!!

They have already paid for the unlocking code from the database, so at best you'll only get a portion of the money returned.

Some phones can have a fault which makes them unlockable, which is why unlocking can't be guaranteed. As Orange say, Nokia will unlock/repair the phone.

All I can suggest is that you make a formal complaint to Orange and see what happens.

had you tried codes before buying one from orange ??

the phone counts the number of code attempts and locks it out after I thnk 3 goes on the newer ones (used to be 5)

On an side note, there is nothing illegal about unlocking a phone, regardless of who or how it is unlocked. Providing that YOU own the phone, you can use it with whichever network you like, so no legal reason why you should ever go with Orange.

Taking it to a mobile phone stand that does unlocking is entirely legal and a lot cheaper.

Whilst that's true, if the unlocking place does a hardware unlock then it leaves a trace which renders the warranty void. In this case it wouldn't matter.

Note also that for some makes a code unlock can be bodged resulting in an erased IMEI. So always use a reliable place with a guarantee that they will put any errors right.
  • I ended up having to send my Nokia to Orange to unlock as the code given did not work. They were really quick, sent on a Monday and was back with me on the Wednesday. I also got the unlock fee credited back onto my account because of the trouble I had with the code.
  • Thanks everyone. They phone is mine (stupidly bought it locked on orange 2 years ago.)

Tried the stalls but all said they wouldn't try because of the model it was.

Think I may have used three of the five attempts but Orange code was the only code I tried so....

Just not happy with sending it to Orange. The phone is like new and my main number that everyone gets me on. I have texts I'd like to keep and don't think I will be able to 'back them up'.

Guess I'll have to 'find a way' if I really want it unlocking and not lose the money I've already paid out.
