Baked ham recipe

Not sure about the 'coke' version, but if you boil your ham in water/cider with onions etc don't forget that you end up with the best stock for soup! Our favoutite with ham stock is leek and potato.

If you are just boiling your ham, cook it for about 15mins less than you calculated, let the meat cool down in the stock and keep the ham in the stock. It remains incredibly moist.

    Happy Christmas

Having boiled my Ham in coke and onions for 3 hours I am now reducing the resulting coke stock, whilst the ham bakes with a honey, mustard, soy and sherry glaze studded with cloves over a baking tray with a bit of water in it - I'll add the bottom of this tray to the end stock and then will freeze the result and use it in the new year.

It's a perfect base for a bean soup or a really robust and warming risotto!

(I'd better feed the kids (six of them - not ALL mine) lunch now as they have been drooling with the smell of coke & ham since 9am)

    Cheers

    Matt
  • I actually have a smoked honeyed ham cooked in FULL FAT CHERRY COKE and then glazed/baked off with honey and ginger sitting in my fridge - It is to die for! There are recipes for it on google.

I did see one in her latest book for ham cooked in cherry coke, but I think that's a step too far for me!

Go for the ham in cherry coke if you can, I've done both versions ( normal and cherry coke ) and the cherry coke one is really really nice, honest!

Did you cook it in the oven or a slow cooker? Thanks.

if you can do the ham in cherry coke thingy in a slowcooker do you then do the remove the skin thing after and brown in the oven - I'm going to get a slowcooker after Christmas with some Argos vouchers and really want to try this.

I did mine on the top of the cooker ( boiled it in a pan ) but I have cooked ham in cider in a slow cooker so I'd think you can do it in a slow cooker with the cherry coke. I did the glazed part in the oven - I used a mixture of cherry jam and red wine vinegar boiled together in a pan as the glaze ( adjust quantities to taste, if too sweet add more vinegar and vice versa ).The exact amounts don't matter too much I would guess. I also made a bit too much glaze once ( actually it was a lot too much ) but I kept it and used it as a sauce over the meat when it was cooked ( it worked as a relish as well on the sandwiches I made with the cold ham too! )
  • Are there any other things you can do with the left over coke that the ham has been boiled in?
  • I've not tried the coke idea but all the above recipes are similar to what I have done. However - I also top my ham with pineapple - drizzle with honey over the top of that and a little pineapple juice.
  • Does it have to be Coke, I only have diet coke in the cupboard
