Hi
My mum is nearly 80 yrs old and bought a laptop last year, only problem is, a friends son set it up for her. She doesn't now know where they live!
My mum has never ever been on the laptop as she has been in and out of hospital since buying it. I switched it on, and it asks for a password, she told me what it was, but says it is incorrect. I have tried everything, lower case, spaces capital letters etc.
Can't even get in at all to use Microsoft Word.
Does anyone know what we can do please? Think she has had it just over a year, so not even in contract. I have rung Sky up but they couldn't help her.
Thank you
Lynda

Sorry, what's Sky's involvement?
It might help if you post the make and model of the laptop. There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
It's for the many and not the few. Be sure it's out there looking for you.
In every town, in every state. In every house and every gate.
Wth every precious smile you make. And every act of kindness.

Start the laptop in safe mode by pressing F8 during the POST. Login using the administrator account (unless the friend changed it the password should be blank[as in nothing, not the word 'blank'], or admin, or adminstrator)
Once logged in go into the control panel and user/account option and you will be able to set a new password for your mums account.0 -
This makes no sense at all, what are you try to log into, the laptop or the Sky Broadband Router?:beer:0

She is just trying to get on the internet, but it is asking for a password, there is a box with a picture of a Marigold and then her name underneath it. Then a box asking for password, i can't see any icons to click onto eg, internet explorer. Hope this helps0 -
Have you tried just pressing enter rather than inputting a password?
And is the machine running Microsoft Vista?
Also the info you have given isnt the make and model, she has just read the stickers on the bottom right hand corner which tells you what hardware is in the laptop, ask her to turn the laptop over and there should be a barcode type sticker which will have the serial number (which we dont need) and the model number:beer:0 -
try the password with a capital first letter. and also make sure the num lock is off; if it's on anything on the right hand side of the keyboard will be a number rather than a letter.0

Yes it is Vista, i am sure i saw Vista
and no i didn't hit enter without putting anything in0 -
Dipsy, try what mj suggested in post #4. You need to press the F8 key just after switching the laptop on - that should get you into safe mode. Then log on as administrator with the password blank (hopefully the friend's son didn't set an admin password). There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.

Does that work with Vista cause they don't have admin accounts (unless you activate it using the CMD prompt)
If it does its very hand to know:beer:0
