Proposal advice from any females?

Need a little help from any women out there!

I am planning on proposing to my girlfriend of 2.5yrs within the next month or so - we are going on holiday on 17 January and was originally intending on proposing there but I think she might be kind of expecting this as friends and family joke about it from time to time! But that was still my original plan and the main contender.

The other option is over this xmas holiday - possibly NY eve. I think I would have the element of surprise with this option however I don't think it would be as romantic as being on holiday??

Plus we are spending New Years at her parents in the lakes - and I'm not sure she would like it where her parents would be around immediately afterwards!

Any ideas?

At the airport on the way there or on the plane (email the airline and see if they can give you some complimentary bubbly):)

  • London Diva - thats actually crossed my mind but don't think it would be that romantic - would it?!?!
  • How about proposing on Christmas Eve, if she is 'expecting it at all' it wont be then.
It'l be xmas day, new years eve or as you say on the 17th..
Maybe something like a little present to unwrap early evening..and an Ideal opportunity for you to have a few unexpected moments to yourselves and followed by waking up to a fiance on Christmas Day?
    Just a thought..Good Luck ;)

I like that idea, I was going to say what about boxing day as it would be totally unexpected and also then if=t can be your special day that you got engaged. You can do the "one last present" line. Just an idea though?

  • Have you got a ring already? Because it was this time last year we got engaged but hubby to be let me choose my own ring and we being MSE'ers waited for boxing day sales! Got a gorgeous platinum 0.75crt 3 stone ring for £700 off the price it would of been prior to xmas. Even the lady selling it to us in the shop said "thats such a bargain that!!". I also loved the experience of choosing together it felt really special. But each to their own I guess!

People have different ideas of what's romantic. Some think it's wonderful if they're being proposed to in public (restaurant, plane, etc), some (me included) hate the idea. It's totally a matter of choice, but means you have to consider what your girlfriend is like and what she would prefer.

I like the idea of New Year's eve - and it will be romantic, trust me! Romance is not about where you are, it's about who you're with. ;)

BTW I was proposed to on an old sofa in a cramped bedsit late one night, and it was the best thing ever. :)

    Good luck! :)

I say if you would prefer to propose on holiday then go for it, it's what's special to the two of you, if anyone's expecting it then they'll just be chuffed for you!

Himself refused to propose when people were expecting it from him (Christmas, New year, Valentine's Day etc) and it ended up being Tescos car park! I adore it, but it's not overally romantic!

My advice is just go with what feels right whenever/whereever you do it will be special becuase you asked and she (hopefully) accepted ;-) (Mr Tescos Car Park agrees btw!)

Completely agree with that statement. Joannasdad phoned me at work and said "Are we going to buy this ring or what" . We went down to the shop which is in a little arcade the week before xmas and got the ring and then as we walked out of the shop he got down on one knee, it was late night shopping and we ended up with an audience . It was the 2nd best day of my life (the best being DD being born).

Do what you think she would like, you know her best. Oh and a premature congratulations :D

How romantic :rotfl: All I got was "Hmmm.... consider yourself engaged."

I was completely bowled over by the romance :o

How about doing the really old fashioned thing and asking your GF's Dad for permission to marry her whilst you're visiting and them at NY? And then go with Lemon Tart's idea about a New Years Day walk by the lake.

    Good Luck

You cannot live as I have lived an not end up like me.
