I got my two when my OH was in spain for the weekend. He'd never had pets as a child whereas I'd grown up with cats and dogs so I wanted cats. Before we bought the house I told him I wanted 2 cats, then every so often I mentioned it to him, then just before he went away I told him I was going to get some! I was really just testing the water with him, but he was alright. I even phoned a few gumtree ads whilst he was around and he didn't make a fuss. Then when he went away I rang a local charity, saw 2 kittens on the Friday, was homechecked on the Sat and picked them up on the Sunday.

I'd put pics on facebook on the Friday and text him to look at them, he didn't object, so I took that as the green light! In all honesty it was the best thing I could have done. I had just over 24 hours alone with them to settle them in and litter train them. We had quite a few accidents (different litter to what they were used to) but I dealt with them and OH didn't have the stress of it. Once he got back he fell in love with them and 3 years on he would honestly never be without them!

So I wouldn't just go out and get one, you definitely need to at least mention it to them both and honestly if they say no then I wouldn't get one. I think it's an unnecessary strain and if you already have a difficult cat in the house getting a kitten will not make things easier!

Why do you want a kitten, and why doesn't your OH want one? Why not an adult cat? Can you afford three cats even if you lose your job or split up or one cat gets a chronic illness (sorry)? Have you considered fostering rescues?

OH doesn't want another one because I make him change the litter :D I want another one, because I love them so much, and on the more practical side, our younger one (he's about 1yo now) is absolutly terrorising our older 5yo cat, I mean constantly jumping out on him from nowhere and attacking his tail (I think its tail envy, younger one was a rescue cat that has had his tail bitten off by a dog, older cat my OH found in a bin when he was about 5weeks old and has such a long tail) and I would like another younger one (not even a kitten so much as just a younger more playful cat) to play with my littlist little man so my biggest little man can have a bit of rest!

All my cats are insured, just in case, and if I did lose my job (which hopefully I wont as it is a secure job... well as secure as you can get these days), the cats would always, always get fed before we do, we have a pretty steady income as the OH is a dj and plays abroad a lot (like this weekend for example) for quite a lot of money for that too so we always have that to fall back on. Probably another reason I want another kitty tbh I do get lonely sometimes!

PS its not pointscoring, I just really really want another kitten, and I didn't mean 'sodding off' i a bad way... he just told me its really sunny there and i'm jealous :( However, I do think you're all right and I may test the water tonight :D

edited to say to 3v3 that my cats get all the love and attention that they need, with me working days and him working nights theres always someone around for them... as for giving the relationship some attention... he works nights and I work days- not much we can do there!

Sounds like your OH needs another sob story cat and you need to plot some girls nights. :p You can have a young playful cat without getting another kitten, plus an older one is more likely to want a cuddle ... My ex-stray is between one and two and a little monster, currently terrorising my poor plants. :rotfl:

Perhaps your kitten-cat needs more prey-like solo play toys, intelligence puzzles, ceiling height tree (climbing burns more energy) or maybe just more rotation of available toys? Maybe clicker train not to attack the other cats tail?

Erm ... not so yay your relationship! :( (BTDT! - challenging, huh!?)

Still think you should put the kitten idea on hold though ;)

Haha sob story cat, fabulous- thats my excuse ;) my kitten/cat has everything, honestly, all he likes are climbing the doors/curtains though (seriously he climbs the doors and sits on the top scratching at it, but not ONCE has he touched the huge scratching post/tree thing we have). He is fascinated by straws though :)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sGVvrDEab8 this is him- I love him for all his naughtiness it keeps me entertained. He comes for a cuddel when he's worn himself out though, but I'm 99% certain he's got some form of ADHD. I've never heard of intelligence puzzles for cats though?

My girl is a climber too, I looked up the other day and she was suspended by her claws on the side of a door (cardigan on hanger on hook). :rotfl: I wonder why he doesn't climb the post - is it as stable as a real tree, is it situated in a central spot where the high point gives a good view, have you tried encouraging him to climb with a laser pointer?

If you are serious with the ADHD comment have you tried changing the diet? Additives can affect pets as well as children, also the cereals in dry food (most of them) can behave like sugar in the body affecting mood and behaviour.

Not really what you asked tho is it?! :o

He is currently refusing to eat anything but grilled chicken or tinned fish, no cat food, but we do mix with dry food as obv grilled chicken costs a fortune. Trying to blend in with wet catfood but he just licks off the jelly and leaves the rest.

The cat tree has its own space in the corner of the room its similar to this http://www.bellapetdesign.com/catal!!!.html but about 5ft high with 5 teirs and with 3 scratching posts and a big bottom stand so its pretty stable its next to the window so he can look outside from the top of it. I think my cat needs an intelligence toy, although i'm quite sure he'd probably just try to eat it or destroy it.

You need to sort out the dietary problem urgently or you could end up with a very sick kitty indeed. Cooked chicken and fish provide protein but no minerals/ saturated fat/ taurine all of which are essential for felines. Fish (esp. tuna) can cause painful steatitis, lack of taurine can cause blindness and heart failure, an imbalance of phosphorus and calcium can contribute to kidney failure, some deficiencies can affect appetite or cause behaviour problems. :( How long is he willing to starve before you give him these treats? Does your vet know how long this has been going on?

The link does not work for some reason. Does the cat tree wobble at all if you push it or a cat jumps on? Have you tried it located somewhere central or covering with catnip or Feliway? Cats often prefer to scent mark (scratch) something in a prominent position - doorways, next to food station, somewhere they pass frequently. Where is he scratching at present? It's normal for kittens to destroy stuff as it's part of 'hunting', is he really bad? I totally get that corners are more practical, I have just started building my own floor-to-ceiling so I don't have to have a giant footprint to trip over when inebriated. :rotfl:
