Disconnected laptop from router now wireless wont work

Daughter has disconnected her laptop from the router for the first time to bring home for Christmas as she didnt like leaving it in the student house as people know students are highly likely to go back home for Christmas more than any other time of year.

Its the linksys WRT54GS and she has it in her room with 3 others sharing wireless. One of the girls has said the wireless is not working now any idea why this is? should she have put the wire she took out of her laptop into something else or rebooted it or anything?
Thanx

  • Provided she has left the router switched on, with phone lead plugged in, it should still work.. unless she had somehow shared the internet connection through her laptop.

it may be that your daughters laptop was connected to the router and acted as the hub for the others. when she removed it she effectively removed the internet connection for the others

How can she change it then if that is the case so she can bring it home when she wants to?

  • If she has managed to do the routing through the laptop thing, (which is unknown at present), then she has completely messed up the correct setup, and needs to go back to square one and set the router up properly, going through all the previous posts on the subject.

If it was setup properly, then it should still work, and may not work for other reasons.

Ask your daughter if the other users could access the internet without her laptop being turned on ...if they could then hers was not acting as a gateway and there must be some other fault..If not then the others should still be able to connect wirelessly to the router by each of them setting up a wireless connection with the router ..it involves tuning on the router then letting each of the laptop find the available networks ..then entering the security number on the router to pair them together.

Thanx she is at home at the moment so she will have to sort that out once she is back again. She just took it out before she left and quickly asked one of the girls there if it was working in her room, she checked and it wasnt but everyone was going home anyway so they didnt need it till after Christmas. I'm just worried in case it wont work once shes put it back in again. Could it be though that the router should have been rebooted once she took her laptop out might that have made a difference? I've not ever used a router or installed one myself but I know when shes made changes before shes had to reboot the router
    Thanx

  • If setup correctly, then the router should just work, whether the laptop is plugged in/unplugged/turned off .. has she unplugged the router from the mains, or unplugged the phone lead?

I know the others use the internet all the time whilst she isnt there but I'm not sure if she actually has hers turned off at the mains or not when its closed down, she doesnt leave her laptop itself on all the time I know that

I will ask her wen she gets in but all she said was there was only 1 wire/cable connecting her laptop to the router so she just took it out. She has an ntl cable modem and the router I'm not sure how they are connected or which she is connected to
    Thanx

the modem should go into the router, then a network/ethernet cable to the laptop. all the other computers could be connected via ethernet or wirelessly to the router
