The Intel High Definition Audio 7.1 is on-board sound i.e. on the motherboard and a separate sound card is not fitted.

I had this problem with my Dell. Fiddled and f4rted around for ages downloading drivers and checking this and that.

In the end I bought a new sound card from Ebuyer for about £7.
  • Well here are some more ideas just in case:

    1) Did you plug the speakers into the output on the Front or the Back of the machine? [Make sure it's the back since manufacturers often don't connect up the speaker terminals on the front of the machine] This may not apply to you, some machines don't have speaker terminals on the front

    2) Are the speakers powered? i.e do they have a battery compartment or power lead? If they do - try putting batteries or plugging it in. The volume for powered speakers when they are unpowered may be very very low.

    3) Make sure the volume in Windows is set to high. Play some music or something that'll last a while, and just plug your speakers into any of the speaker holes in the back [this is a just in case tactic].

    4) [Techy] Is the soundcard enabled in the bios? Press the F1 or F2 or DEL key when your machine starts up and there's white text on black background.
Use the arrow keys to go to the advanced or devices section, look for onboard devices, enter that and it should have ENABLED next to onboard sound. (I can't really give a very specific step by step to this since I don't know which bios is used in your machine).
  • Sorry to hijack your thread, OP, but I am having speaker trouble too.

I have just bought two computers from Dixons which came with no speakers. They are an EI 302 and an EI 303. They have on board sound Realtek AC'97 I have connected the speakers from my previous computers which were also EMachines. The sound is so low that it is barely audible.

I have checked all volume controls and they are all fully up. I have downloaded the most up-to-date driver and tried everything I can think of and still the sound is very low.

Anybody have any ideas? The speakers were working perfectly on the previous machines.

I have emailed Dixons, but heaven knows when they will reply.

I would buy new speakers if that would solve the problem - but could it be the on board sound? It would be odd if it was faulty on two machines.

Are your speakers powered , in that you have to plug them into the mains, or not. It used to be quite normal to have passive speakers and a soundcard with amp to power them. But this is rarely the case now.
  • No, the speakers are not powered. Is it possible I need powered speakers for the new computers?
  • Got my speaker issue sorted. Bought a set of speakers which have a usb connection as well as the usual speaker fitting. Now got wonderful sound!!

a little handy tip, if you buy a PC or computer good from any of the Dixons group (Dixons, currys, PC World etc.) then this website has all the data about you system and its components. Another useful thing is it keeps all historyal data from PCs from 5 - 6 years ago. Sometimes it doesn't have the newer models of systems they sell, but they are added quickly.

Another pro is that you can check systems out before you buy them, which is where you can find out how bad and cheap the compents are.
