"Cash in Hand" job to help clear my debts.

In this day and age, what work can be undertaken (legally of course!) where the pay is still cash in hand. I currently work as a Civil Service Energy Manager in the week and a Sales Person for Royal Doulton on a Sunday. These jobs are paid direct to my bank account with all due taxes deducted.
I'm looking for additional income to throw at my debts but would ideally like to find something casual and cash in hand. I don't want to do baby sitting and would rather not do dog walking. I'd consider delivering our local free paper for 1 night a week if this got me some cash. How much would a one night a week paper round pay? £10?
Beyond this, all I have thought of is seasonal work such as fruit picking. Would any small independant garage or corner shops pay cash in hand for a few hours work a week? What about a market stall? Has anyone done anything like this before?
Any experience would be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks

If you're on a payroll whether 'cash in hand' or not, it's legal.
If you're not on a payroll, however they pay you is illegal, unless you're their only staff, whereby you would pay tax on your income through your tax return....
Hope this helps! Remember, ignorance is not an excuse, which people get stung by thinking their work is genuinely tax-free becuase it's cash in hand...
Bahhh humbug0 -
I've just got a job with Aqa, http://www.issuebits.com/
Its not cash in hand, you have to register as self employed so set aside a percentage of earnings to pay tax. They seem to regularly advertise for UK, there are a couple of threads on the forum about it. The ideal thing about it is its completely flexible, so you can work it round your other commitments.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0 -
What about bar work? Or cafe?
Some of my mates do this and it's cash in hand.Ever wonder about those people who spend £2 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backward.0 -
Just read your message again and have thought of something you might want to consider - if it's cash you're wanting to be paid, you should really reconsider and get a second job that pays directly into your account each month - you could give your employer your savings account number so that you don't just absorb your pay every time it hits your account - you could then just transfer it to pay off some of a debt. You could even give them your mortgage account number!
I work in a big 4 star hotel as a barman at the weekends (I know you want casual so it may be a problem for you!), and earn about £200 per month after tax. This gets paid into my savings account, then gets taken straight out again to pay off debts, so I don't rely on it...0 -
Thanks for all your replies so far guys. I do accept the point that ignorance is never a defence over this issue. I had forgotten about bar work and cafe work, didn't think you could get this cash in hand anymore. I'll check out the Aqua link too, thank you.
I also take your point about not absorbing the extra wage in my current account Timmne. I've worked on a Sunday in retail for the last 7 years and it is only in the last 6 months with this current job that I have seperated this additional income. I used to just get my second wage disappearing amongst the direct debits and rough and tumble of a current account. Now, I make a cheque out to the exact amount of my second wage and post it as an overpayment on my car loan. It does take trememdous will power but you soon trick yourself to "live" on your one full time wage!0 -
what about mystery shopping ?
some sort the tax out for you ,others you have to register as SE
ive also got cash in hand jobs cleaning and babysitting
what about asking local companies about leaflet distribution ?0 -
Absolutely!
It's said you 'live to your means' and never notice a payrise, which means that really if you take a chunk out of your pay you should also not notice it; merely work around it!
Although when I come out with things like that, i wonder why I have debt!!0 -
Hi Rachie B,
Cleaning could be a good one, do you mean private homes? If so, how would you find this work without going through an agency?
Timmne - the theory of money management is easy my friend, it's the practice that we struggle with!!0 -
hi what about something like avon or betterware, i do know that with avon as a rep it is classed as commission so you don't have to declare what you're earning but will be different if you become a sales leader.

As much as I hate to come out as an accountant, commission is taxable and therefore declarable...0
