ipad 2/iphone query

First of all, apologies if I've posted this in the wrong place! I'm about to buy an ipad 2 with wi fi but I'm not sure if I need 3g. I've read I can tether the ipad to my iphone to use the internet but I'm not sure what this means or how to do it! Can anyone help please? Thank you

For an upcoming trip I'm just going to buy 1 1GB data bundles on the Virgin PAYG sims - think this works by ensuring there's over £5 balance then texting 'DATA5' to 789789.

Longer term I'll be looking at the above suggestions, there are good ideas for the new age of data!
