ipad 2/iphone query

Options
First of all, apologies if I've posted this in the wrong place!
I'm about to buy an ipad 2 with wi fi but I'm not sure if I need 3g.
I've read I can tether the ipad to my iphone to use the internet but I'm not sure what this means or how to do it!
Can anyone help please?
Thank you

Tethering is basically the ability for a mobile to share it's Wi-Fi/3G connection to another device. (usually laptop).

Depending on your Network it might be Disabled. (but there's apps that will let you do it.)

Check your iphone's wireless settings for either (Access Point, Hotspot or Tethering)

Access point & Hotspot turns your iPhone into a mobile internet access point that any wirless device can connect to and use it's 3G internet connection.

Tethering is usually done via USB cable and lets the attached device use the 3G or WiFi connection.

You might have to use the HotSpot to get iPad online with an iPhone

    *NOTE*
I've not got either so I can't be sure of the above!

But that how it works on my Android Mobile.

Buy the 3G version if you can afford it, and want Internet access when you're out and about.

Seconded - built in 3g can come in very handy.
  • You'll need a 3G pay-as-you-go card, or a contract though

I went for the bog-standard wifi; since i can tether to my android phone easy-peasy.

Also, i've found i don't take my ipad2 out of the house much anyway!

Don't bother with a 3G model - if you want to check the internet while out and about you can use your iPhone.

Thank you so much everyone for your advice. I took your comments on board, went to the apple shop, asked a few more questions and finally decided on... 3G! Lol. I couldn't resist. Although its more expensive I liked the fact that I could pay per day (£2) and can, hopefully, connect to the web pretty much anywhere.
Thanks again for your help, much appreciated:)

Just buy one of these every 3 months or when the 3GB is used up (whichever comes first) works out alot cheaper than £2 a day (£60 a month...!!!)

You just need to cut it down to size or buy a sim cutter and away you go, just remember to turn your 3G settings to OFF on your iPad or it will use your data when you don't want it. If you don't have it turned off it will connect several times a day (to check for emails etc), so you will get charged £2 a day whether you think you've used it or not.

The £2 a day option is IMHO a very bad deal.

Also you can't tether an iPhone 3GS / 3G, it's only iPhone 4's you can do this with.

    This is NOT true.

I have a first gen iPad and an iPhone 3GS - since the last OS update (4.3.2 I think - i'm losing track!) "Personal Hotspot" was added ("settings" - "personal hotspot") which does what it says on the tin, bluetooth connection for shared 3G network. (I've also used my iPhone as a wired tether to my laptop when my internet was down, but this option has always existed).

I disagree entirely with people saying to get a 3G iPad (although am aware that it's now too late). Personal hotspot does the same thing without taking a second sim/data allowance and the device is cheaper.

I very rarely use 3G data on my ipad, if I need to get online I use my phone on its own. Besides, 3G is not strong enough for useful things like watching Sky Sports, iPlayer etc. so only basic browsing - which the iPhone can cover anyway.

    Just my humble opinion/experience though

I stand very much corrected, I also have a first gen iPad and 3GS iPhone, so just checked and it now works has you state. You used not to be able to connect an iPhone to iPad then on OS4 they release a Hotspot option for iPhone 4, but not the 3GS it just had there tethering option (which you could use on a Laptop, but not iPad), so something has changes with a later update either to the iPhone or iPad, either way it now works.

Yeah I think the update came with the iOS update for iPad 2 launch, but can't remember exactly.

iOS5 is out in "autumn" - presumably accompanying an iPhone 5 (4GS?)
