Help with a somewhat naive question about new rental and electricity please?

When we go to pick up the keys for our first new rental property, is the electricity likely to be switched on or off?
Do we just call an electricity supplier in both instances to either get it back on if it's off or to get it in our name if it's already on?
If it's off, is it a quick process to get it on again?
Sorry, I realise this is basic but I've never been in this situation before so not sure what the process usually is.

99 times out of 100 it will be on.
Ask the LL or agent who the supplier is. Or :
contact the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524 ( 0191 216 3000?) and they will tell you who your current gas supplier is
READ THE METERS - gas, electric and water if applicable, and get the LL/agent to sign the reading. Ideally it will be recorded on the inventory.
Then either
1) ring the supplier on the day and give them your name/details + meter reading and they'll put the account in your name and start billing you from that meter reading OR
2) use a comparison website, select an alternative supplier, and open an account wih them instead (you may have to do 1) above first and then switch later.)0 -
You just phone them up and they'll set you up and give you an account number, it should be quick. On moving day make sure all the phone numbers you need are to hand so you can get it sorted right away.
If you have a key you will need to go and activate it.0 -

Or perhaps quicker & easier, send email to LL/agent noting readings..(then print email off & sign & date it).. at least that pretty much establishes your position.
Having established who accounts are with I'd then send letters/emails to them (elect, gas, water..) noting readings, copy agent... , keep copy.
Cheers! Hope your new home works out fine..
