Sky won't let me downgrade

Hi all,

My 6 months discount with Sky is coming to an end so I rang to see what deals are available to keep me as a customer i was told there weren't any...

So I downgraded my TV package and wanted to do the same with my broadband. I'm on unlimited at the mo but wanted to downgrade to lite.
They checked my usage and found that each month I was over the 2GB limit, in most cases by a hundred or so megabytes....
They refused to let me downgrade because I go over the limit for this package.
I told them at present I am on an unlimited broadband package therefore why would I be watching what I use, however if I moved to a capped package like the one I want then I'd be careful I wouldn't go over it, they still wouldn't budge!!!

Can they do this??

Thanks

They can do what they want within the contract terms,
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I'd tell them I'd become unemployed and ask nicely if they're able to help you during your difficult time with limited money available.

  • I've been looking to sign up to Sky Broadband, so had a quick look at their terms and conditions and it doesn't say anything about this. As long as you're not within the first 12 months, then I'm not sure how they can force you to stay on the higher package.
  • They always have the option to refuse to do any business with someone, but I can't see how they can refuse to sell a cheaper product once you are out of contract. This type of company always try to chance their arm - you just need to push it. Did you speak to a general employee or one of their specialist ones (not sure what they are termed, but Virgin have people who only deal with clients who want to leave - they get things done.).

As soon as I knew I was being given a voluntary redundancy package I rang them to ask for a downgrade, but it was infuriating as they let me ditch a couple of elements (cartoons and music) and then tried to persuade me that I was only saving £4 it would be as well to leave them. Then we got onto dropping HD from the big TV downstairs ... I was asked if I hadn't seen a benefit to having HD, to which I replied that I saw a bigger benefit of being able to put an extra £14.25 that I was saving towards my essential bills (y'know - food, heating, light, gas, water!!!).

Then the other day someone rang me to offer me a reduced rate to have it back. I pointed out that when I hopefully start back at work in August, I should be in a position to get it deactivated in September, when I get paid. Boy, was the guy insistent. In the end, I told him that I would call up Virgin if he didn't stop pushing and that did the trick. If it wasn't for the fact I had issues with Virgin when I was in my previous place and that they make a total mess of one's drive to put the cable in, I would definitely do it, but I can't afford the repairs/replacement of the drive.

Was it a year deal, discounted for 6 months? (sounds like it) If so then you have had the discount, now you have to honour the rest of the deal.

Looks like it could have been as OP only joined Sky in Feb

So as you say remainder of contract has to be upheld

I think sky are trying to do this person a favour...
yes they are on unlimited, and use more than the lite package...
there is a very good chance op will use more, and maybe end up paying more... i think thats what they guy is trying to point out here.

if i worked for a boiler company and someone called up to go to a £50 repair fee, to save £100 but called us out on average 3times a yr.... i would do my best to keep them on the one thy are on as its very likely they will end up paying more.
Promo codes are never always cheaper..... isnt that right EuropCar?
