  • soups are such a great way to make low cost meals, carrot soup, lentil soup (i make with a mix of red and green lentils to give it extra flavour), tomato & lentil, leek & potato (made with frozen leeks keeps cost down), a spicy tomato & bean soup,

i also used to do a risotto type dish when i was a student fry off an onion, add frozen peas, frozen sweetcorn, mushrooms - whatever was in - add rice and stock cube then add a tin of baked beans - sounds a bit odd but because i used to make a fair batch the sauce wasn't too overpowering, just added some extra flavour and protein

re cleaning stuff - keep an eye out for cheap eco balls for laundry, they last for ages and ages, i stocked up last time aldi had them on special offer

for fresh food, have you tried sprouting seeds to add to salads? alfalfa, mung beans, lentils, fenugreek are my favs - very nutritious, sprout them in a jar with some muslin over the top, i try to keep 3 jars on the go all the time

Still here picking up ideas - and my current lot of beansprouts are starting up (peanut ones - first time of trying and they take rather longer to "get going"...).

I'm bone idle when it comes to saving money on food and whatnot, but I do love reading these threads!

There are loads of mushrooms growing outside in the field beside me, but I don't know what type they are, I know some of them are deffo magic mushrooms as you can tell by looking at the people picking those mushrooms - that they are intending to make some nice frugal tea :rotfl:

There are some quite "tarry" mushrooms, they are quite large, and flat topped, and if you kick them, it leaves what looks oil on your toes (stupidly did that with flip flops on!)

I'm quite lucky that my daughters grandma, has a lot of fruit trees in her ever expanding acres, although, I'm not keen on fruit :rotfl: I'm waiting for my freebie spuds!

Oh, does anyone know what I can do with a bag of green split peas - besides pea soup? I ordered red lentils on an online shop and they gave me split peas. I think they've been in one of my food cupboards since the dawn of time, but I'll eat anything me (except leeks and celery *gag*)

By no means an expert, but I would use them for any recipe that needs pulses. Houmous, dhal, curry, split pea pilaf - lots of recipes
HERE (admittedly, mostly soup :p). Or use in any stew or casserole to bulk out.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

I lost the recipe but Sophie Grigson did a fantastic nettle and dandelion risotto which might be Googleable.

In the past I have cultivated dandelions by picking the fluffy ball and planting the seeds in a grow bag using tweezers. As long as you use them young, they are really good in salads and as a veg.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned sorrel but that's another one for soup and salad.. I went on an organised herb walk and it was really informative.

    Googleable- what a cool word!

How did you find out about the herb walk? I'd love to learn more in the foraging world

One of my favourite meals at the moment is tinned tomatoes, beef mince and rice, it's really good! Onion can be added but I hate them so don't. All the ingredients are so easy to make into other meals also so there is no waste.
