Eating raw was very "fashionable" in California a few years ago, but called me old fashioned if you want but I think that sometime you need. GOFCF. In English this means....Good Old Fashioned Comfort Food!
Funny IBS was my thought as well, you might want to try bagals and pitta, leavened bread as they call it.Ebay 13........1583.46/2000.00 Amazon sales 54/50 Etsy sales 63/50

Hello. I'm in a similar position to you. I've recently become unemployed and am having to really watch the pennies. I also don't have a car which really makes bulk buying locally impossible. Plus its no fun lugging bags of shopping on buses. I have a Tesco round the corner which I can walk to which i suppose makes me lucky but I think recently it has become really expensive. So firstly my sister recommended Aldi - it costs me £3.80 on the buses but the first time I went I compared the prices with the Tesco website and even with the bus fare I saved around £7 on my shopping list.
Somewhere else on this form there is a discussion about rice (I looked but can't find it). Someone had recommended buying big bags of basmati rice from Amazon (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Badshah-Basmati-Rice-10-kg/dp/B00432JB9M/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1309500769&sr=8-1). Its a 10kg bag of rice for £10.97 and with free delivery. Amazon do quite a few eatable bulk buying items, many with free delivery.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
PS Just noticed the rice is out of stock - probably all the moneysavingexperters snappng it up - its due back on stock on 10th July. I had my first serving last night and its really nice rice!0 -
This is my breakfast biscuit recipe which might help you. It is super quick to make and can be made using milk powder or watered down yogurt etc:
Makes about 20 give or take
2 cups of flour
a good pinch of salk
1 tbsp of baking powder
4 tbsp of shortening..lard, butter, marg, half and half, dripping etc
1 cup of milk ( I have also used milk powder, water, yogurt watered down )
Mix the dry stuff together and add the shortening..rub it together like you would a crumble then add the milk, work into a dough but do not over work as it will go tough when cooked. Roll it out to about half inch thick and cut out with whatever cutter you have or use a old jam jar etc.
Bake in the oven for about 15 min on a medium heat
You can also fry them on a skillet if you don't want to turn the oven one. Served best with british hoppin jon, sausage and eggs etc
Hopping Jon (ok not the real stuff but really tasty):
for 2
Fry 3 slices of smoked back (chopped) until crisp then add one onion and fry until soft ( chop that how you like) add a bay leaf, mixed herbs, salt and pepper and chilli to taste.
Then add black eye peas or any beans really as long as they are pre cooked otherwise it will take hours
add 1 can toms and 1 can water
leave to bubble and serve when happy with the taste.
You can also add maple syrup to sweeten it or worcestershire sauce to make it more savory
Grits are like polenta
So you get homeny grits ( can be cheap if you can find them, some stores do stock them as they can be used in place of corn meal etc)
For about 1.5 cups of grits you would need about 6 cups of water which you bring to the boil and pour the grits into the water stirring all the time until thick, you then add about half a cup of butter to it and salt , pepper etc..
You can also add eggs (about 3 for that amount) and then pour it out into a oven dish and cook for about 1 hr in a medium over.
It can be flavoured with anything you like but garlic , chilli and cheese is my fav. It can be eaten loose like mash or cooked until firm in the oven or even cooled and then griddled later on.There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;
So they break the hearts of kith and kin, and roam the world at will.

OOW Gothicfairy thank you for the biscuit recipe, I am really lucky in that I can still use the commissary at the local USAirbase, and tend to stock up on Jiffy and Bequick mixes when I go, but this should save me some money.
As for sharing my experiences, I can remember landing in the UK after being oversea's since the tender age of 18 (now 45) not knowing a soul and feeling like a complete alien. My husband had just died, the person that had made all the big decisions, heck I had never seen a heat bill all the time I was married. So had no idea about money, apart from my allowance, that was pretty much for luxuries.
But that was in a past life, or so it seems.
This site helped me in so many ways, not just money saving.
Now is my time to give back.Ebay 13........1583.46/2000.00 Amazon sales 54/50 Etsy sales 63/50

Here is an asian shop that I have used in the past. they deliver free if you spend 19.99
Again if you use it once a year you could pick up all your beans peas lentils. Without giving yourself a heart attack on the way home. They sell all Asian food as in oriental as well as curry stuff. Could you perhaps share the delivery with a friend so you don't have tospend quite so much? http://www.theasiancookshop.co.uk/red-lentils--masoor-dal-2104-p.aspEbay 13........1583.46/2000.00 Amazon sales 54/50 Etsy sales 63/50

Hi, firstly I'm grateful that everyone is coming from a caring place to offer their support. That is the spirit I am taking this information. I think it's important to be able to express openly here, even if we are making different lifestyle choices.
I very much respect everyone's opinion and no worries Fire Fox's I can hear that you are trying to help me thank you for your valuable information. We are all different and that's good. I like to keep an open mind and learn for different viewpoints. I agree about Omega 3 and I try to include probiotics with yogurt etc so I think I have that covered.
Thank you for the recipe Gothicfairy great resource, I'll also take a look at the rice link from 415SanFran and Saxonrosecliff great resources, and I can hear how much this site has helped you practically and with the support from others. It's great to be in a position now to give back.0 -
