Don't think my dad likes his, but they meant something at the time, and are part of him.

Fashions come and go. Tattoos are very much in favour again. Am sure a lot will regret them in years to come - but lots won't. Tonnes of my friends are covered in the things - from head to toe in some cases! Definitely no regrets from them. Each to their own :)

    .y's Mum,
Thanks you are spot on,i am so pleased you seem to put it all into perspective ,having seen Pn's post that is exactly where i am ,and will discuss this with my husband later. We have always tried hard to do the right thing and it has been tough, just really worried .Our son had discussed this briefly with my husband and he was waiting to see if it was going to be neccesary before discussing it with me.

    abroath lass,
You are very wrong ,but i can see why you might think that.

I'm glad but give him a call and apologise over the tattoo issue (whether or not his Dad is going to be his guarantor). It was his choice and he can't undo it now even if he wanted to make you happy.

    Abroath Lass,
Think we may need a diffrent thread for that issue,i posted about his tattoo mainly so other posters did not think, any petty argument's had ever involved money. Our son has always paid his way,but [as always]it was also his choice to move to Manchester without first checking up on what rental options he had, without involving us.
I by no means wish to sound harsh,i am as PADDY'S MUM rightly said worried.

There's lots of regional variation, but I studied in Manchester and needed a guarantor at two different estate agents despite being in my late 20s.

So did I as a student and I never needed one.

    Kateliana27,

your post has put my mind at rest somewhat with regard to guarantors being regard as n the norm now,

They are possibly the norm for slum landlords but no normal working person should be expected to provide one.

The only reason it is becoming more the 'norm' is because so many people unquestioning sign up to be one without thinking about the massive responsibility it entails with absolutely zero benefits. It essentially takes all the risk of being a landlord off the landlord and puts it onto the guarantor. But the landlord still keeps all the rent. Why anyone would sign up to that I'll never know.

Tell your son to find a proper landlord who is willing to treat him as an adult.

Standard practice for students at Manchester to need guarantors. No guarantor = no tenancy.

I suspect it may well be a regional thing. I rented in Manchester, as did a previous poster who said it was the norm, and as is your son. Mine was through Reeds Rains by the way.

I never needed a guarantor when I studied in Manchester. And the OP never said their son was a student, it sounds like he's moving there to work full time.

Last year my friends daughter started as a doctor in Liverpool. She was 24 (atleast) and earning over 50 k but had never rented a full flat before (had lived in uni then hospital digs) . She needed a guarantor.
