Santander Rant.....

As it says on the tin......

The query - why hasn't the money I sent to my daughter on Saturday arrived yet? Normally when I transfer cash to her it hits within minutes....

Call customer services, very nice lady:

Me - can you please tell me why the money isn't in my daughters account?
Her - yes the payments normally take 3-4 working days
Me - normally I transfer money to her and it hits within minutes
Her - is it a Santander account?
Me - no but still I transfer money and minutes later she calls me to say its arrived, so how is this transfer any different? Also she has the money which was transferred on Monday, 2 days later!
Her - well sometimes you will be given the option to choose a quicker payment...
Me - no it never gives me that option, I just fill in the amount and 'submit'...
Her - well a payment takes 3-4 working days...
Me - ok, I understand, but it is normally instant, how is this payment any different?
Her - I am trying to make you understand - sometimes you will be given the option to choose a faster payment...
Me - I dont get that option... EVER
Her - I am trying to make you understand....
Me - I understand what you are saying, now understand me - I want to know WHY this payment is different, why it has gone the slow method???
Her - sometimes you will be given the option....
Me - Dont bother, no wonder you get rubbish ratings online. Goodbye.

Ahhhhhh all I wanted was a simple answer, why the delay...
Now this transfer was significantly higher than the amounts I normally transfer but this didnt appear to be the reason. And I wish I got the option for faster payment every time but I dont and dont normally need it... sigh, bloody customer services.

How much did you send ? You can't send more than £300 per day by faster payment, once you reach this limit either as a cumulative amount or a single amount it will only send by the slower method.

Really?? Well thats news to me. Thank you, a very simple answer to a very simple question.:D

The amount was a lot higher than that as its a big upfront deposit for my daughters flat rental.

I'm not sure on the limits with Santander, but the Halifax sometimes does this also.

More often than not, it automatically sends via Faster Payment, but now and again for no apparent reason it will opt to send using BACS which takes 3-4 days.

I have moved over £1800 using FP in a single transaction, however sometimes if I try sending multiple large sums it automatically reverts to BACS. I've always assumed this was for security reasons.

I don't really have an issue if this is the case, however, you would think the customer service person could tell me this instead of blaming me for not choosing a non-existent faster payment option.....

Some banks allow up to £10,000 to be sent through faster payments but Santander only allow up to £300. I have transferred some quite large amounts of money from Lloyds TSB to my Santander account and they have gone through straight away but if I do it the other way round then it takes about 4 days.

I only discovered this when I transferred my rent money from Santander and it didn't hit my other account until after the rent was due, luckily I rent off a friend at the moment so he wasn't all that bothered about it being a couple of days late.

This is the situation for us entirely. The money is for my daughter to move from halls to a private rental for her 2nd year at Uni so its a fair bit of cash. Had I not transferred it in oodles of time it could have been a nightmare. (we could probably have found some way round it it would have been a major pain in the derriere!)

So why couldn't the dozy person on the phone have told the OP this?? That's all he or she wanted! Why does it take someone on the interweb to answer the question?

And £300's a paltry amount. I transfer much larger amounts than that (Nationwide/Lloyds) and they always go the faster route.

    Because Saturday's aren't a banking working day.
Fast payments work from Monday to Friday, exc Bank Holidays, where both accounts are within the network :)

Again, if this is the reason (sounds reasonable so why not?) why couldn't the person on the phone have said that??
