Our son is in Austria and has an Austrian SIM. No Landline. No PC. What are the best ways to contact from our landline or o2, Tesco, and giffgaff mobiles?

That is still a rip off!!
It is not only Vodofone but all big name providers have rip off rates.
One would have thought with the 'economies of scale' that they enjoy, the can offer cheapest rates.

It may be that with far too many outlets in prime high street locations, their overheads are high.

Yes, that is what we use. I just wondered if there were others as the list given in an earlier post (for calls to India) was outside my knowledge.

We call America & Canada a lot and our home phone and mobiles are registered with 1899.

    http://www.1899.com/index2.php

If you really must use your mobile to call internationally, what I would do is buy the cheapest phone on O2 or unlocked (or get the old one out of the junk drawer! lol) and order a Giffgaff sim. When you top up Giffgaff with £10 you then get free 'freephone' calls. (you then need to top up every 3 months or buy a goody bag to continue to get the 'freephone' calls).

You then dial the 08081707474 access number and then dial the person's number. The calls to USA/Canada are 1p a minute but more expensive to India & Austria. I think Giffgaff are the only mobile network that give completely free 'freephone' calls which you need to access most of the 'low cost' phone companies.

Providers in that list can connect to many countries; not only to India.

For Austria check out these two:

    http://www.localphone.com/call/austria
    Landlines: from 1.2p per minute
    Mobiles: from 3.7p per minute
You can make a free 5 minute call to try it out

Might be worth looking at others on that list, for rates to Austria.
