IVF......How to save costs!

Options
I was told yesterday that its more than likely that the only way I will ever be able to have a child is through IVF.

I can not go on the NHS waiting list as Im too young, you have to be between 36-39, Im 27.

SO, I will have to go private. I have heard that there are certain clinics that offer discounts if you donate eggs or sperm to them, and was wondering if any one knew of any or any other way I could reduce the estimated £3000 cost.

Thanks

  • Hmm bizarre you've been told that you can't go on the NHS waiting list at 27. I was under the impression that women aged 35 and over were not entitled to nhs infertility treatment at all due to their age and the risks involved. I'd double check if I was you.

I'm thinking of a tubal tie reversal. Does anyone have any idea what the success rates are?
  • same as the last sorry

It varies area to area, on which trust your NHS is in. In mine they wont even consider you until your 36. Which is crazy because your fertility decreases the older you get.

You can go to your doctor and ask them to appeal, which is one thing Im going to try.
  • Yes definatly appeal. It's crazy how they won't allow you to even be put on the waiting list. I really wish you the best of luck, I'm desprate for a child myself, and was kind of pushed into a tubal tie because my GP refused me the contraceptive pill. I had no other option available at the time, and didn't want to risk getting pregnant, as I wasn't in good financial circumstances at the time. I'd just moved house and my father had just died, so I wasn't in a position to manage a pregnancy. I've appealed against a tubal tie reversal procedure being carried out. However, I suppose that depends on whether my GP has actually wrote an appeal letter.

I also am saving for IVF. As you are under 35 you can probably do egg sharing if you want. You share you crop of eggs with someone who needs doner eggs, they pay more, not sure if you pay for your drugs or not, but I think you get most of it free :-)
I'm 39, so that option is out of the question for us. Also I have a 19 year old daughter from my first marriage, so that rules out NHS IVF for us.
The HFEA publish very informative free books, go on their web & request it, loads of info.
Rules do vary around the country it's madness. I'm Surrey & they are very strict. Berkshire is not to far away & I heard about someone getting NHS IVF for 4th baby with 3rd partner!!! But I wonder are these stories just urban myths.
Look on the plus side, you are young, that's good. You are eligible for egg share, that could be good if you decide you are willing to try that.
Good luck, feel free to email/PM me.

  • Kim, please xplain more about egg sharing. I'm 34 and would be interested in this option, as opposed to having a tubal reversal. More info would be appreciated. Thanks

its ludicrous that at 27 years old that you are too young for ivf.

to reduce costs of ivf ask your gp if he will prescribe the medication for treatment, as this drains you financially.
secondly ask the consultant if you can do part ivf privately and part ivf through nhs (i.e scans monitoring bloods etc), this also could reduce the costs.

ivf is very emotionally strenuous on your body and relationships, i have been through 7 cycles starting at age 26 (37 now) and obviously with many failures, happily now i have 2 children, but not without alot of pain, health scares, ivf nearly cost me my life, and i ended up on life support. the most i ever paid was £1800 and that was because i had a supportive gp who prescribed my medication
    Give blood - its free

I asked about my GP perscribing the drugs, NO NO NO was what I was told, wouldn't even consider it.
Part private/part NHS - my NHS consultant agreed to do another sperm test on my husband before the results of my tube x-ray came through, but said he had to be careful that we were still NHS patients for any tests carried out as the NHS were very strict about that & did not allow ANYTHING like that.

But personally I see your point & agree :-) Shame the NHS don't :-(

To be honest that's about as much as I know, but go on the HFEA website & get the free book, as that will have loads of info.
I think you will need to contact clinics & see what they offer.
Get a move on, I'm pretty sure 35 is the cut off.
    Good luck :-)
