Royal Mail - lost item

Hi,
I have had a buyer that has said that she hasn't recived an item.
I refunded her money as it was only for a few quid.
I wasn't going to claim for it through Royal Mail, but I thought why should they get away with it, so I am looking at their website.
Has anyone done this and is it worth doing?
Do you put down the exact amount that it cost through Ebay or do you cost it as if you were replacing the item? The item was something I brought too much for my baby and instead of just throwing it away I listed it but I didn't get what I paid for it back, I assume I entitled to ask Royal Mail to cover the full cost of this item.
Please let me know of any of your experiences.

Complain to Royal mail and they will tell you that, unfortunately they handle millions of items without any problems and it is not possible to help you because of the enormous amount of mail they handle -- all codswallop of course. The most you will get from them is a standard letter as above, possibly with a book of 12 first class stamps to keep you quiet!0

I havent done it myself but if you sent it recorded then it is covered up to £28 for loss or damage , so you should be able to claim.0

If you have given it like 15 days and still no sign of the package go to you post office and tell them. They will hand you a form to fill in and then you just got to see what royal mail come up with.0 -
From this page on the Royal Mail Website
"What happens if your mail is lost?
If your mail gets lost, we’ll give you a minimum compensation of 12 First Class stamps. However, if there was something of value in your mail, we’ll refund you the market price, up to a maximum of £28. Please apply for this within 12 months.
If you’d like to claim for late or lost First Class mail, you can do so here ."
As they state "market value", I'd take that as being the replacement cost.0 -
I had a whole load of parcels go missing in the weeks up to Christmas, some recorded and some just with a COP.
The two for which I had a COP I filled out the standard lost parcel forms, attached the original COP (keeping a copy for myself obviously) and sent them in. I also sent a copy of the ebay invoice (blacked out the user ids, although I don't really know why I did that!). I also had a recorded delivery one and I did the same except that I sent the recorded delivery slip in.
Got 2 cheques back, parcel one they refunded the whole amount lost including p and p which came to just over £4.
Parcel 2 they sent me a £5 cheque with a note apologising for the loss and saying that they could not refund the post and packing element. However the £5 was more than the selling price of the item without p and p so I can't work that one out.
Parcel three was a recorded delivery item and they refunded the whole amount (£18+) including p and p from the ebay invoice.
In each of the cases though I had already either refunded my buyer or sent an identical replacement item. All three buyers have also left me positive feedback not mentioning the lost parcels at all.

Look for the item on the net,
Find the most expensive,
Print the page and send it with the form from the post office,
Send any proof of posting you have,
if you have no proof send the form anyway when asked for it tell them you sent it with the form,
them ask them how you can trust them with your mail when they loose part of what you send them,
works every time.

Hiya
Something I sold on Ebay went missing, I filled out the form from the Post Office, sent them a copy of the Certificate of Posting, and a copy of the Ebay invoice and they sent me a cheque for the amount of the item on the invoice, but no compensation for the cost of postage, which I thought was strange, but at least I got some money back to return to the buyer.

how about making in invoice in word and setting your own price for the item (within reason) and include p and p charges in the total?
would this work?
