Usual rules about personal security at the outdoor market! The indoor market has a couple of inexpensive cafes, as well as being an interesting place to wander round (leave it for a rainy day, as it often does!) The market is just behind the old train station on Central Prom, opposite the Midland Hotel. The Tourist Information is inside the train station building.boniespook wrote: »There is also Happy Mount park in north morecambe if you fancy a walk, pitch and putt and suchlike. They often have the brass bands playing at the weekend. South of Morecambe is Heysham villiage. Its a quaint windy street place, with amazing beach and views.
Good shout! Both are in opposite directions to each other. Both are a lovely walk along the promenade, and if you're into birds of the feathered variety then take binoculars. Check the weather forecast too, and if in any doubt take a long mac and a brolly that won't blow inside-out!.boniespook wrote: »In Lancaster there are two pubs on the canal we used to go to. The water witch had an iced cider which is fab on a sunny day, and the white cross. Both had nice food. There are often live bands on at a few of the pubs at the weekend if thats your thing.
Both these pubs might interest Supergran 2007 as they're only a few minutes walk from the Travelodge. The Waterwitch has the nicest setting, as there are always a few narrowboats moored alongside.
Most Tourist Information offices around the country should stock the free brochure of the area, called Lancaser, Morecambe and the Lune Valley.[/QUOTE]0 -

You Scots do like Morecambe!
Before the sad decline of UK seaside resorts Morecambe was always mobbed with Glaswegians, with Blackpool taking the overflow;)
Many Scots came and never left!0 -

Morecambe isn't known as 'the town that time forgot' for nothing;)we met an elderly couple from dundee when we were staying there, they live there ten months of the year !
I bet they live in a caravan, and fly off to somewhere warm for the few weeks the caravan park is closed. I'd do that, but I'm afraid our lass wouldn't entertain the idea.0 -

That Travelodge is very close to the Golden Dragon which most consider to be the best Chinese in Lancaster - its kinda near the police station, about a 5 min walk from the travelodge. A few more mins walk through town, behind TK Maxx is a good Italian called Verdes. They have a £5.25 meal deal lunchtimes and up to 6.30PM. You will be able to park for free if you're ok leaving it a 5 min walk or so away...
You should also go and look around the Castle and the Priory church next door to it - at the top of the hill, near the train station. You can't go into the castle as its a prison but worth walking round the outside, and the priory should be open.
I've just spent the afternoon on Morecambe beach - lovely day for it.
As well as the 2 pubs on the canal, my usual is the Stonewell, near the St Nicks Arcade carpark entrance. Has live music but it is very loud...0 -

Verdes is on Church Street.
If Supergran is interested in the Stonewell Pub, then from Verdes carry on down Church Street onto Lower Church St, and the pub is at the bottom on the left My problem would be the temptation of other boozers on the way. There's a Yates' about 50 yards down from Verdes which serves up decent pub nosh. Being a university town one thing Lancaster isn't short of is places to drink. Not sure where the free parking is though. You should also go and look around the Castle and the Priory church next door to it - at the top of the hill, near the train station. You can visit Lancaster Castle, but not the prison bit...

From the Priory, which is next to the castle you get great views out towards Morecambe Bay, and there's also a path right by the Priory which takes you fairly steeply down to the Quay. 5 minutes and you're at the Quay. Turn left, and after 150 yards you reach the Maritime Museum and a couple of pubs (George & Dragon, and Wagon& Horses).I've just spent the afternoon on Morecambe beach - lovely day for it.
Lucky fella! We've got to wait until the end of September for our once a year visit. Staying on Westgate Caravan Park, opposite The Globe (home of the Mighty Shrimps!).0 -
Thanks pete, I was, erm, being lazy with directions. Can't quite believe you lot come here for a holiday! I live round here when not at uni.0

I was born in Lancaster. Lived on Sun Street, No.13, now an hairdresser. I left the city when I joined the RN in 1971.
But we regularly return, though not as often as I'd like.
I can remember the town before the University arrived. It was just a lovely old market town then.
Traffic congestion was never a problem in those days.
And because of the the way the Lune runs the problems with traffic will never end. I don't think the M6 link road will make much difference either.
Making public transport more affordable might help a bit.
I hope you found a bit more sand at Morecambe the other day than on these photos...

...:rotfl: We know this is some decent yellow stuff, all imported at great expense though!
You (and Supergran) might enjoy this...
