Neither have HD, for that you need a Freeview HD PVR.
The Humax has the most intuitive interface. The Bush will no doubt be clunky, ill-designed and irritate the hell out of you.
If you want the cheapest, by all means get the Bush, if you want a decent one, pay another £30 for the Humax.
Lots of plus votes on here for the Hummy, I can't recall a single Bush buyer singing their praises. It's simply an Alba brand these days-cheap but not very cheerful.

OK, thanks for the info. I have a Bush VCR which has always been fine, which is why I thought it'd probably be OK.

As I understand it, there's no point in getting an HD PVR if you don't have a digital TV? They don't seem to be much more expensive - maybe £120?

You do have digital TV,that's what you're watching now with Freeview.
If you don't have an HD Ready or Full HD TV, (and no plans to upgrade) then correct, no point in having an HD PVR.
A decent Freeview HD PVR is very much more expensive than an SD one.
Almost all Freesat PVR's are however HD equipped.
Your Bush VCR probably dates from the days when Bush was a well-respected and British-built brand. Those days have long gone, the brand has been bought and sold several times over-it's just a badge now, like Grundig.

You will need HD kit to receive the Republic of Ireland channels, the coverage area is the Island of Ireland and west Wales.

Technical details: Northern Ireland transmitters will use MPEG4/DVB-T2 (like FreeviewHD but in standard definition), Republic of Ireland transmitters use MPEG4/DVB-T with RTE2 in HD only.

Where does the OP say that they need to receive ROI channels?

Thanks. So probably best for me to go for the basic PVR as above.

Is this simple to set up (i.e. take out existing Freeview box and put in PVR in its place)? Can I just leave the VCR as it is?

Yes, it's a straight swap, just connect with a SCART lead.
