Web safe cards? no more cahoot webcard!

  • I can only imagine that they're removing it because most users where they're not sure of the legitimacy of a website, would use it. Obviously that's the whole point of the web card in the 1st place, but I can imagine it not being financially viable for them to chase up all the money that was lost through fraudulent websites.

It is a real shame because I used to use it a lot for peace of mind. Although I did tire of generating a new card for each transaction, and trying to explain to sellers that the reason I don't know which card I used to purchase something, was not because I stole the card information, but because I was using a temporary credit card because I didn't trust them.
  • Cahoot IT bods not very bright, I can still use my webcard and have sent them a mail with the details and screen shots of how I am doing this, just completed another transaction which has been approved, sent the mail on saturday with red flag but have had nothing back from them.......very very slack, think The guy in charge of this system should go!!!
  • idiots.. no more webcard.. well thats me closing my account with them.
  • Its not just new applications that are being affected. Having just tried to use my Cahoot web card when paying for an Amazon transaction I got an on screen notice that it has been discontinued. After e-mailing a query about it am told that: "We have made the decision to remove the cahoot Webcard facility for a number of reasons.
We have found that this facility is only regularly used by a small percentage of our customer base and as such believe that the resources currently dedicated to running it could be better utilised elsewhere. "
There was no pre-warning of this and I am dismayed. I took out their credit card and web card when first mentioned by Martin some years ago. I have used it ever since for web purchases and promoted its use to others in a voluntary U3A personal finance group I run. I am wary of using a normal card and cannot understand why they have not promoted its use much more widely. To me it was the only safe way to credit card shop on line.
    Anybody got an alternative?

Boo! I used to use this a lot when buying from new or unkown internet retailers. Won't take the risk if i can't use a temporary number.

  • I am also very, very disappointed that Cahoot just removed this feature, without ever informing us in the first place that it existed. They never promoted it, and then they removed the Webcard because "not enough people used it". Wow.

IMO The webcard is quite pointless probably hence why they binned it. If you want to stop your card details being used fraudulently online do 2 things.

Register for Mastercard Secure code/Verified by VISA

Use a virtual keyboard to enter card details, I have a virtual keyboard option on my Kaspersky Internet security 2010. Doing these two actions alone will dramtically reduce the risk of fraud on your cards however it won't protect you against the number of website data attacks that are on the increase...

Those two steps protect you from "man in the middle" attacks, i.e. someone eavesdropping on your connection and stealing your card details.

They don't do anything where you have willingly given your card details to a company and they turn out to be dodgy - for example, continuing to bill you after the end of a membership period, or charging you a higher price than you had agreed, by slipping in extra surcharges after purchase.

It can take months to get this claimed back from the card company. It was so much safer and easier to use a temporary card, with a maximum spending allowance, and an expiry date of your choosing, so that if you buy from an unknown internet retailer, you know they can't continue to use your card details beyond what you have authorised.

Thats another great reason for using it
