Honeymoon ideas for July

Hello! I'm getting married at the end of June 2007, and so I'm looking for some ideas for destinations for a honeymoon in the first couple of weeks of July. We were originally thinking of going to Italy by train (seeing Venice and Rome over 10 days or so), but having thought about it more, I reckon it'll probably be too hot and crowded for my liking then.

We're pretty open to suggestions of places we might not have thought of, away from your standard honeymoon destinations. Not very keen on conventional beach holidays - we'd like things to see and do while we're there. My husband-to-be and I are both interested in art, architecture and history. Neither of us drive, so it'd have to be somewhere we could get about without a hire car. Would be great if we could get there without having to fly (don't mind flying, but trying to be environmentally friendly), but not essential.

Budget wise, looking to keep it under £1500 for both of us, but this is flexible - if we decided to go somewhere once-in-a-lifetime-ish we could go higher.

All pretty vague, I know, but just looking for starting points at the moment. All ideas or recommendations very welcome! Cheers!

Have you thought about cruising? We did for our honeymoon and loved it.

  • Thanks. I don't think a cruise is really our thing. I do like the idea of seeing a load of different places on one trip, but the thought of a set timetable and being stuck on a big boat in between just doesn't appeal.
  • Have you thought about travelling by eurostar and then buying train tickets to whatever COuntries you decide to visit.

It is a very cheap way of travelling in Europe. Have done this before, went to Germany, Poland, Austria and Switzerland which you could probably do in your budget.

I was also about to suggest Interrailing. It's not the most obvious honeymoon, and I imagine you'd want to have a slightly higher budget than when I went as a student! But it's great fun, and of course you have your pick of the art galleries in Europe. You no longer have to be under 26. A single zone card is EUR286 (195 if you're under 26) - about £180 which is valid for 16 days. So for your £1500 you'd have a budget of £110 a day for 10 days. Not high, but do-able if you're avoiding the big cities and maybe book ahead.

If you fancy Italy (and quite right too!) then how about the Naples/Sorrento/Amalfi area? It will be busy but not as bad as Rome/Venice. You could stay in somewhere like Sorrento, then there are excellent buses and trains around the area. Art galleries in Naples, history in Vesuvius/Pompeii. What's not to like!

Alternatively, we went to Croatia last year and adored it. You can do most of your travelling by bus/ferry. It's not huge on the culture side, but the people are wonderfully friendly, it's very cheap so you'd easily stay in budget and the countryside is beautiful.

  • I think OP's original plan sounds very good. Early July should not be too hot nor too crowded. If culture if want you want then Italy is the place to go.
  • I went on my honeymoon last year and did 4 days in Las Vegas which was fantastic then flew to Hawaii for 7 days and then stopped in LA for 3 days and flew back , There was quite a bit of flying but got to see three great places and had plenty of time to relax , Also the price was very reasonable for the package
The trouble with work is that it interferes with living

May not be the best place since the OP doesn't drive! Although actually when I was in LA I did once have to get buses around and it was surprisingly OK. Not sure I'd want to do it as a matter of course, though.

    I'd go to Thailand.

    Suggest

2-3 days Bangkok = Hustle Bustle smells busy culture shock fantastic temples reclining Buddha etc
4-5 days Chang Mai = relaxed city, mountains rain forest rain forests etc
Or 2-3 days Angkor Wat in Cambodia - simply amazing
1 week Koh Samui / Krabi Pipi or other island = prefect beach

Might be tight for £1500 but with some good shopping you could do it for about £800-£900 each.

    Once there is very cheap

(If you really want to push the boat out Kuwait Airways are flying there business class for £900 each at the mo)

In terms on green credentials you can always offset your carbon and or do some charity work whilst there
  • Some great ideas there, thanks!
