Luggage allowance & transfers (worth it?)

Hi,

Just looking to book my first holiday away and was surprised at the amount of money they added on when I tried to book on the phone - £40 per person for the luggage allowance (steep!) and £28 for transfers which is only a 10km drive to this particular hotel (also steep!)

I was wondering firstly whether 20kg (1x luggage shared) of luggage is enough for two people for a week? This also includes 5kg of hand luggage too. Maybe even hand luggage at 5kg would be enough and save us the £40?

Also the transfers, £28 each for a 10km journey - worth paying so you don't have the hassle, or is it generally easy enough to get a bus or even taxi from the airport to the main resorts anyway (fwiw either Rhodes Town or Ixia)

Thanks!

(booking through Teletext holidays fwiw!)

I very much doubt you can do a week on 5kgs.

What about doing a trial run and filling one suitcase to see if you could manage with one?

Which airlines is it with? I found a holiday at a good price with an online travel agent. When I called them it didn't include baggage and they quoted £60 PER PERSON for 20 kgs. When I checked the airline website it was only £18 booking direct.

As for transfers, you can probably do them cheaper with someone like A2B Transfers or Shuttle Direct. Travel Republic are normally even cheaper.

Teletext Holiday are not a travel agent, they only advertise travel agents. Can you remember which company it is?

The hand luggage bag may weigh up to 2KG empty. Certainly for a week you would be able to share 20KG hold luggage.
Transfers depend where you are going, how much it is by taxi or public transport in comparison. For transfers I find https://www.airporttransfers.co.uk pretty hard to beat.

If it is a flight + hotel deal then it probably isnt a "proper package" in which case it may be better to just book the flights direct and hotel seperate. This can save quite a bit as a quick search on https://www.RoomRateCompare.com and https://www.hotelscomparison.com will highlight the difference in price between companies for exactly the same hotel.

Plastic bags are light and save most of that 2kg. Or use those cheap folding bags you get from Pound shops.

You can't take much of the liquids anyhow so you may as well leave them behind and buy on arrival. Wear your heaviest clothes, stuff your pockets with heavy things and leave the hand luggage for clothes. Do some shopping in resort.

My husband and I went away recently for 4 nights and paid for 2 checked bags...to us it was worth paying the extra to know we had plenty of space and weight to work with - and we had room and weight to bring additional stuff back with us. Could we have coped with just one bag - yes, I'm sure we could have...but it was much more relaxed packing knowing we could each take pretty much what we wanted with room to spare.

I know the site is all about moneysaving - but in some cases, it's more about value for money...to us it is worth it to pay for 2 bags....there is no way in this world we would go away for a week with one shared 20kg case...but I know other like the discipline of cutting down the packing to a minimum...it's just not for everyone.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

2 lots of hand luggage (typically 10kg per person) plus 2 cases (at least 15kg per case), just how much stuff do you need for 4 nights even allowing for bringing stuff back?

Are you planning on booking a flight and then accommodation separately?

May be worth looking at a package, they usually come with included luggage allowance and sometimes transfers.

Olympic give you 15kgs each (upgrade to 20kgs for £3.99) and transfers are included.

Sometimes it's worth looking at the total holiday price instead of being drawn in by cheap flights that might not work out that cheap once you've added all the extras that you need on.

Onlt you can know if the person you are travelling with will want to take a different pair of shoes for every day etc.

We could manage on 1 x 20kg case for a week but I wouldn't particularly want to.

When we book a weeks holiday abroad ( twice a year ) we justtake cabin luggage ( ten kg each ) this is plenty and with room for my hairdryer. We started todo this a few years ago when airlines started charging phenomonal amounts for chrcked in luggage. taking just cabbin luggage saves as much as 60 pounds per trip, much better spent on other things. We have just returned from two we eks in crete and were allowed 20kgs of luggage each at no extra cost, even taking half a dozen books I still only had 17kg!! How many clothes do you need on holiday? Careful thought has to be given to packing which can save you a fortune in the long run, sorted.
enjoy every day, you dont know how long youve got!:o

The problem is, a lot of people just open their wardrobes and drawers amd chuck everything in with little or no thought to what they might wear.

I mix & match my outfits to ring the changes and usually wear everything I've taken.
That has evolved over 25+ years of holidaying though.

10 kg is probably enough if you do not want to dress up at night and are going where the climate is hot and sunny. But Thomson and Thomas Cook do not offer 10kg - just 5kg and very tight size limits for cabin luggage.

Thomas Cook hand baggage dimensions are measly!
    1 piece of hand baggage no bigger than 43cm x 28cm x 23cm

    Compare that to other airlines.

And note that they operate a '1 bag' rule so you can't even take a separate handbag.

I couldn't do a week on 5 kg of hand luggage - unless I was planning on hitting the shops as soon as I arrived, which sort-of negates the savings made by not paying for hold luggage.
