That sounds like a scam email to me - verify the number by using Cahoots website if you do follow this up. Do not contact them through any links in the email or any contact details in the email unless verified by their official website.

It was a genuine email from Cahoot! I spoke to the Card Fraud centre this morning (located somewhere in Spain) and they confirmed that although the email was genuine, it should not have sent. Apparently, although I closed my accounts last year and destroyed the cards into a thousand little pieces, some person/persons unknown have managed to get hold of my debit card number and having been trying to use it online for the past few months, the latest transaction was at the weekend purchasing something from Netflix! I have copies of my credit reports - obtained yesterday afternoon which shows that all accounts are closed and more importantly, nothing else has been opened!

The card fraud centre. Where did you get this number from?

The email. However I called Cahoot on the no shown on their website (0844 9000 900) and ask them to provide me with the no as I wanted to verify the email. The number they gave me matched the one in the email.

Or look at it as they have just saved you (and themselves) from being defrauded by thousands of pounds. Would you be as upset with them if they had not cancelled your cards?

What is it with people like you? Pathetic.

Fair enough. Good on you for verifying the number from another source. The reason I say this looks like a scam is that I have before recieved a very similar email from a bank/card provider I have never used to an email address I don't use for banking.

Moral of this story. Avoid Santander like the plague.
Yep. The best thing about any Santander branch is the door marked 'Exit'.

Nothing wrong with the comment you're complaining about. It's a sensible point.

I fully understand and its always a good point to make. I nearly didn't make the call but there were no hyperlinks in the email, nothing to download and was addressed to me! Even with all of that, I was still very sceptical and just initially thought that it had been sent to me in error, considering its Santander (and hence why I closed all of my accounts in the first place!!!)

That was even more sensible than verifying the phone number!
