Bearing in mind we generally get more wet and cold rather than actual snow and ice in most parts of UK, be careful about buying hceap ditchfinders. Plenty of reviews out there on main brands and many test their wet and dry capabilities as well as snow

Its very well being able to get out and about when we get freak weather but driving on the edge for the remaining 4 months probably wouldn't be fun

I got Goodyear winters last year and they had great all round performance for the cooler months

Indeed so, but there are ditchfinders and there are ditchfinders.

The Nankang, Nexen and Duro cheap winters seem to get decent reviews. Not sure I'd go near the Linglongs or Goodrides though.

Avons and Coopers seem cheap enough -- anyone know if the quality is there?

Cooper bought Avon a while ago, they're made in the Far East somewhere.
Wig had some summer ones a while back if I remember.

The wife has Avon ZV3's on the front of her Clio, very good in the wet and in the snow.

Not sure how they will be for longevity, but done 10k now and there seems to be plenty of meat left, I think they will last longer than the Continentals that just disappeared from view such was the speed they wore away at.
