o2 early termination query - advice required

Hi, I tried searching for this but didn't find anything that answered my question.

I am currently in month 12 of my 24 month contract with o2 Im paying £40 a month for my iphone.
I would like to cancel my contract early and spoke to two different operators.

The first informed me that I am legible to downgrade to the next available tariff as 9 months have past, for £31
Then in the 12th month ( next month for me) you are again able to downgrade further to £26
And this operator quoted me a figure to terminate the contract early.

I rang again today to go about doing this but I was told, I have to downgrade - stay for 30 days, downgrade and stay for 30 days and thus will have to wait until September to cancel?

I know it works out exactly the same amount of money but do I have to wait until September or can I get rid of it now????
Surely I should be able to do it now? The operator said I had to be a minimum of 30 days between downgrading?

Any advice is appreciated.

You can cancel at any point, but if you want to downgrade your tariff you can only do that once during your 30 day billing period so if you downgrade your tariff it'll come into effect the day before your next billing date then after your next billing date you can downgrade your tariff again which again will come into effect the day before your next billing date then you can ring up to cancel.

ILoveEoin, please try posting in english and not text speak as it makes it easier for people to read.
