Hmm....no left-over chicken unless it is frozen and used in the Thai curry at the end of the month? But can't see any soup from the stock...?

BTW boneless chicken thighs are tastier and cheaper than breast.

I use the whole chicken in a roast. Chickens arnt that big and I'm only having one for the month. The bones that are left are stocked and frozen for later use in anything like stews or soups....I use ice cube trays for this.

The cooking juices from a roast make the gravy. I think it might be pushing it to get any more meat out of the poor thing, but, you might have noticed my pot luck stew in the middle of the month? That's where the mid month left over meat and veg goes. Any veg that's looking wilted, or is left over from the steamer goes into a slow cooker with the chicken stock I'm making after the roast and any left over meat from cooking or plates that was frozen until then.

Fine, I'm game if you are. I'm going monthly shopping on Friday night. I have £100 to spend and no more if I can help it. I have two adults and two children to feed. Lets use this thread as a spring board. Anyone else can follow along, but I need to actually do it since I only shop once a month, it has to be right. I'll post itemised bills with costs and we'll see if it really works.

Well - i must say - I wish you well if you do this and all good luck.

I do have to say that the fact that I'm vegetarian and count sugar out....errr...and a leetle factor that I've got a full-time job and eat as organically as possible all adds up to its not the sorta challenge I feel personally "up to":o. So I do have to state that my own personal parameters are somewhat different to many on MSE......

I guess I am well aware that the vast majority of peeps have such different parameters to mine - ie they DO eat meat/fish, arent "as organic as possible", arent extremely "health food minded" (ie cut out the sugar, etc), dont have full-time jobs and that is a rather different "point on the spectrum" to where I am at" personally.

So - in fairness - I havetae say that I mentally register all these -very obviously MSE and fit well in with a more "conventional" way of eating than I do. But - many of them dont fit my own personal parameters.

    So:
I do do kidneybean pate (from Frugaldom) for instance
Courgette flumps (goodness knows who that was...)
Have got potato bread on the to-do list (from Pink Winged)

and am steadily working my way through many of the recipes I see coming up on Old Style.

If I ate in a different way to what I actually do - then I would be in there trying, for instance:

    - Twinks
    - ChocClare's Chinese Chicken

for instance...but they dont fit in with the way I personally eat.

Yep...I know...I know...that makes me in the minority at present re how I eat:rotfl::rotfl:...

So - thats how "t'land lies" in my direction...over to you as to what you think about proceeding with this...and good luck if you do.

You could work out the cost on http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk...

Also, anyone with chickens or a veg plot / lottie would see a reduction in cost again.

Does that work for Netto and Aldi?

I've forsaken Asda....the last pre-new me shop there cost me £300 a month. Last month I did the same shop for £150 at a budget store. I'm still getting to grips with what is available and for how much.

Well - DO NOT go googling it forgawdsake :rotfl: - or your education will be "expanded" <ahem> <cough>...but in MSE terms its those biscuits that a poster put the recipe up for a while back and that are deemed totally irresistible...one comment being "Resistance is futile".

That is - everyone seems to go a total bundle on them.

It not being my own personal way of eating - then I havent tried them....but it would appear pretty much every other contributor to the Old Style threads has and loved them:rotfl:

Uh oh, I think I may have fallen into the 'Internet tone of voice' trap. That flippant comment was really more, yay, let's try, not come on if you think you're hard enough. I did think you might want to join in but I didn't take into account your special requirements which you have now made me aware of. That's fine, I didn't declare that my youngest daughter is allergic to cows milk, so we have to make allowances for that.

I've posted my meal plans which, with the exception of the takeaway were all taken from the Old Style thread as agreed. Looking at the recipes, I could probably improve them at the expense of the budget, but thats not the idea and the spirit of the challenge can only be bent so far.

Something I fall down on is vegetarian meals. I sense you could probably help me here. It's good practice to have one vegetarian meal a week even of you are a meat eater. Can you suggest an amendment to my plan that might achieve this at least once more than I have included?

Excellent....linky? I have 16lbs of flour to use and I intend to bake till I drop.

Oh, and one last thing. For all those thinking that this is just fine for a housewife who has some spare time, I work a full week. If I can, you can too...truly.

COuld a mod maybe split out the OS recipe challengy conversation that's happening? It's very interesting but maybe diverting from the OP's point.

To the OP - can you cycle anywhere at all? Maybe arrange your work so you can have at least one day where all your visits are in a cyclable distance? Otherwise, are you jumping in your car without thinking about it at the weekends, as you're so used to it? Cycling makes a huge difference to my petrol bill.

    Fair 'nuff...:)

Well...those courgette thingies I mentioned. I'm 99% certain that I got the recipe from Old Style somewheres....

    COURGETTE DOLLOPS (for 2)
    225gr grated courgettes
    50gr grated onions
    50gr self-raising flour
    75gr grated cheddar cheese
    2 eggs (beaten)
dash of milk (would imagine its perfectly possible to use an "alternative" type milk)
    seasoning
    oil for frying

    - Mix all ingredients well.
    - Heat a large frypan with a little oil or butter in it.
    - Place heated tablespoons of the mixture in pan and cook 2.5 minutes till brown.
    - Turn over and cook the other side the same.

    ***************

Now that is a rather cheap/easy recipe - which I found tasty and would think would adapt readily to other vegetables instead of courgettes.

    ****************

For another thought - Gingham Ribbon used to post up pretty regularly on Old Style. She is just an occasional visitor these days and sometimes posts elsewhere on MSE. She is/was? a vegetarian and had several vegetarian meal threads back awhiles. These gave several weeks worth of ideas, according to season and she included a lot of recipes on them. Well worth a look methinks....
