Niki i think you have just nailed it for me thank you
it is possible to meal plan when everyone has the ideal 9-5 job,
factor in 8 until finishing time, while being on call 24-7 then things do differ.
I was more thinking that the baby costs would be un bearable
Hi Ben
I am a SAHM but my husband works long and unpredictable hours. What I tend to do is feed the kids at 5.30 and the adults at around 8pm. If OH is late, I make his for 8pm and reheat when he gets in, or if I know he'll be late or unpredictable make something which can cope with long slow cooking (casserole, etc) or something which only needs a few minutes cooking to be done fresh when he gets in.
We still menu plan, but the eating time is flexible. If he doesn't get in at all to eat what's been prepared it becomes a freezer meal for another occasion for him, or a lunch for me and baby later in the week.

We use maybe 3 or 4 nappies a day now at 10 months and have done for many months... when she was new we used maybe 8 at the most... uness OH had an accident putting one on.. he kept pulling the tabs off.. *rolls eyes* He simply refused to use the washable nappies and as he does mot of the changes I wasn't arguing.. though I might in 3 months time when we have 2 in nappies!
I'm a nazi too so didn't buy formula.. but that can be quite expensive. chances are your OH will choose to feed this one the same as the other 2 so your answer is probably there.. but you could ask her.
How much roughly does your OH spend now? Adding in your costs to her budget won't make much difference..
I have found up until about 4 or 5 children are fairly cheap to feed.. sparrow portions!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

Molly i have, and do appreciate your view.
my partner is moving from struggling to be a single parent of 2 and fighting through the system.
as to the 'needs' of my stepchildren, do we know each other? as they are my partners kids from a previous relationship her kids not mine. We are soon to be living together yes, the only child that is mine is the one that is due to be born.
I am an adult yes. and have been for a number of years. But this does not retract my ability to take offence to posts on a forum. I am well aware that kids grow, have the teenage years and 'may' need accounting for.
I asked if £100 per week was enough. I got a decent reply, and then miss judgy

What the heck is that all about? Molly made a perfectly reasonable, sensible reply to your post and you've gone off at her - why? She didn't judge or pass comment or troll, just offer help (and, speaking as a stepmum, sensible help).
Good luck.******** Never be a spectator of unfairness or stupidity *******"Always be calm and polite, and have the materials to make a bomb"0 -
Molly was right there will be big transition for you all to live together full time, there was nothing bad in her post , why not just ask your other half about these things.0

Err...what?
I would ask your partner what she spends per week, factor in a bit more for you, nappies and formula (if needed) and see where that leaves you. £100 definately seems doable but as another poster has said they early weeks with a newborn can be very chaotic so allow for convenience food/ lack of planning during this timePeople seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

babies are not all expensive, my 9 month old costs me around £100 a month, in that i buy formula, disposible nappies, baby wipes, baby jars (only a few jars as i try mainly to feed homemade food) hope this helps0

Emmzi, Nicky. You are right. I have deleted my original post. The main reason for my over reaction is that i didn't outline the past, or explain the current situation. It is all personal so does not need broadcasting over an open forum.
I have asked my partner what she currently spends, this is not the issue. I have drawn attention to myself i know. I can't apologise enough for my comments as they have already been made. And i should outline everything before asking for advice.
It is my fault as i was reading knowing what i know without explaining it properly0 -

I tend to spend around £100-£150 per week to feed 2 adults and 3 children, including all cleaning stuff and toiletries, with one baby not in disposables and not using formula. But I could cut down on this if I needed to. We eat meat for virtually every meal, and meal plan based on what we fancy eating, not what is cheap or in season, nor based on what we already have in the store cupboard.
Cheers Nicki, the only word i can think of is HUZZAH
Mum is intending to breast feed, we have more baby clothes than we know what to do with. I have a box full of 0-3 boys clothes, plus maternity wear that is surplus and can be passed on if anyone wants it?
I think i am going to stick with £400 / month, the nature of the trade i am in dictates i very rarely have time to eat during the day, and sometimes start pre breakfast so i tend to meal skip and have a big take away / dinner and sometimes find myself spending £60 / month for just me.
Granted a crap load on take out due to the convenience. think 60 - 400 is a big chunk of income gone0
