if i have a tenner in my pocket, i cant just pretend its a £20!

There's a reason TVs come with a 12 month warranty. Because the people who sell TVs prefer that consumers believe that's how long they're covered, while for many goods the SOGA means that they are covered for longer.

In this case, the retailer is pretending that the £10 in your pocket is actually a £5, and the amazing thing is that so many consumers believe them.

Point is, phone Currys first, explain you think a 19 month old TV should last longer, and see where you go. Then come back and update us.

If they require a engineers report, then thats what has to happen. Regardless of what other people say, if outside of 6 months, it is down to you to prove it is inherently faulty. Some people on here will argue the law states it must last a reasonable time, while that is a part of SoGA it doesn't mean item X must last for X time otherwise it is assumed to fail the reasonable time frame.

Aka, would you expect Currys to replace a TV which has blown up because your house was hit by lightning and every electrical device plugged in blew up.? A extreme case, but you see the logic, the law does state it has to last a reasonable time, but as a part of the if outside of 6 months it is up to the consumer to prove the fault was there part of the law.

    *Edit*

By the way, it sounded like you actually went into the store, which won't help as there is little they can do in store, you have a better chance of a simple resolution with the call center.

When the shop (not Curry's) were unhelpful I rang trading standards and they were very helpful. The woman talked me right through what I needed to do, told me how to word the letter - she couldn't write it for me but she listed all the points then she asked me to ring back to let her know how I got on which I did.
After trying about three times on my own the letter I wrote with help from TS did the trick and the cooker was sorted within the week. I didn't need an inspectors report but if I had she said get an independent one for obvious reasons.
    Good luck

PS - I never buy from Curry's, once bitten....... But I do use them for research - nice range of goods to look at......

aims for 2014 - grow more fruit and veg, declutter
  • It's a Matsui 26" lcd. In store the manager was under the belief that after 12 months its not curry's business and gave me his name and instructed me to phone trading standards if i weren't happy. He was basicly saying it's bad luck and i can't expect anyone else to pay for that.

Your contact is with currys, BUT the store will not exchange or refund.

If you can see your receipt you will see your contract is with DSG Retail LTD (at the bottom), hence phone the call centre and explain you want a repair / refund. They will transfer you to the correct department who will either say "hrmm, yep we can offer a FOC repair or a partial refund" or they might ask you to get a independent report done.

The Store can't do anything except give the number as they just don't have the processes in store.

Sigh, I would give you the correct phone number to get directly to the OOW (Out Of Warranty), but I've forgotten it.

Like I said, give them a phone and keep us updated.

Contact Currys Customer Services and ask to speak to the Resolutions Dept. I had an Acer laptop that completely died two weeks out of the warranty. Contacted the store who gave me the phone number. Had an independant report done on it, mother board stopped working, and they arranged for a replacement laptop, refund of report and money towards phone calls and travel. Very helpful and all sorted within four days.
