help needed with t-mobile sim

I got a t-mobile sim today and put it into my phone but all the screen comes on but it says searching on it I tried to top up using the card in the shop and it said network down it will not top up I have done this on three occasions today and it was the same. I cant dial out on the phone or have anyone ring the phone. I have tried to register the sim online but it sends the one time pin number to the phone which can not receive it because it says searching on the screen. Can anyone help me before I chuck it out the window
