I have bought a property. Is it reasonable to expect it to be clean?

This post made me laugh so much I nearly wet myself!
I have helped clients buy dozens of homes, a few have been left spotless but the majority needed a through clean and repainting.
You cannot seriously expect the previous owner to pay a cleaning bill.
My current home was so bad it took 4 family members an entire week-end to clean. That's was because the previous owners wife left him and i don't think he'd cleaned in months!0 -
All - practical - suggestions welcome then as to how not to be put in the situation of being expected to clean TWO houses then?
Don't think telling the owners of the "go to" house that they HAD to clean theirs because I would be cleaning mine (and it wouldnt be fair for me to have to do two) would be sufficient to get them to clean it....:rotfl:0 -
To be honest, I think cleaning should be done by the buyers. There's plenty of time for that once you've moved in and started unpacking. On the other hand, when packing up to move, most people are incredibly stressed and busy.
We move out of our house in 4 days and will do as much as we can, but it certainly won't be left spotless and perfect - there's just too much else we have to do. And I won't expect our vendor to do so either.0 -

From this post I read that you live in a filthy house!!! :shock:0 -
We complete on Tuesday and i started cleaning today.
Just room by room. I can't leave the house with all our dust and fluff all over the skirting boards from behind furniture..i would feel wrong!
As it is i have just found a coffee stain on one carpet...it looks horrible :S thinking about leaving some cash and nuimber for a carpet cleaner! my other half thinks i'm crazy and shouldn't care0 -
People's expectations are too high. My next door neighbour cleaned before they moved. It was always a spotless house anyway. When the new ones moved in she told me it was filthy and they had had to clean all weekend.

only problem I ever had was previous owner had obviously put all their plants into the bath while they moved everything else and when I was desparate for a bath the night I moved in I had to clean it of loose dirt.
I would expect to clean both houses due to the fact that just moving boxes, furniture about is bound to create dirt. Its not that we have more patience as we grow older, its just that we're too tired to care about all the pointless drama0 -
We opened the grill to find a grill pan that had cooked sausages 4 months ago (they looked like sausages).0

I'll hire some professional cleaners when I buy a house. Toss them the keys, go down the pub. Full of win.0
