It's not just the £100 you have to pay though. You have to pay any difference in the ticket price, which on the day of travel may be astronomical. Usually it's cheaper to get another ticket.

But Mishomeister, do have a look at the TA air travel forum. They say it's no problem. They also say Ryan says it's no problem. A telephone call to Ryan will probably reassure you.

I am pretty sure it is no problem to change a name, in fact it is nothing more than pressing a button or two and the cost of printing a new ticket ad posting it out; about a pounds worth. But the issue comes when they charge a hundred pounds, for a pounds worth of work.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

One reason the budget airlines won't allow name changes it to prevent travel agents / agencies booking up the cheap seats early on and trying to resell them later. Charging high fees to change the names actually benefits the average flyer by preventing this.

(Of course some airlines also want to make as much as they can out of small mistakes. There is no reason why they couldn't change a minor typing error for a nominal administration charge)
  • Just to bump an old thread I found whilst searching for an answer to this question.. i just booked a flight and added my wife as MR bristolbaron.
Called RA on 08712460000 [i couldnt find a freephone number] and they changed her to MRS within 2.5 minutes, free of charge.

phew, thought that was going to be £100 for a minute! :T
  • Dear Customer,

    Thank you for contacting Ryanair.

Regarding your recent correspondence we would kindly ask you to provide the correct refference number so we will be able to change the title free of charge for you, however the title is only a formality and will not appear on the boarding pass.

    Yours sincerely,
    Otto

There you go. Some random person pretending to be ryanair has sorted it for you.

I'd brazen it out anyway. Just because titles are usually gender-specific doesn't mean you can't call yourself Mrs if you want to. Perhaps you're a gay man and like to use a feminine title. Up to you, innit. They can't start arguing it doesn't match your passport because your passport doesn't contain a title.

What if you usually use Miss but accidentally selected Mrs? Are they going to demand to see proof of marriage? What if you're technically a Mrs, but style yourself as Ms? Do all your forms of ID match? I doubt it. Some of mine still say Miss, some say Mrs and some say Ms.

What if you're a Dr but use Mr/Mrs/Miss in your non-working life? My brother calls himself Mr, yet he has both an MD and a PhD. Some of his correspondence is styled Mr and some Dr.

Titles are neither here nor there and they haven't got a leg to stand on if they try to demand a fee for changing it.

I'm guessing that after 2 years the flight has already been and gone.

Or the airline is citing 'beyond our control' not to pay out meal vouchers etc for the mummified skeletons still on the apron.
  • I booked flights just now through cheapoair. I entered Miss on the form for my partner and booked the tickets. The site informed me there were no seats remaining, retained my details and asked me to pick another flight. I started to do so, when an email came in from Ryanair, confirming my itinery! Nearly booked 2 flights

Anyway, the itinery had Mrs on it. As the cheapoair site had retained my details and was open on another flight, I could see what I had entered - it was Miss! Suspicious.

As they're both female titles and not on the passport, we'll just go for it.
