Why are you going to struggle? it will only cost you an extra mouth to feed, you already pay all the bills as things currently stand anyway? at most it will cost you £10 per week. Without meaning to be rude i question your commitment to each other to be honest.

Why? She was just saying they'll struggle, and she's probably right.

If the extra mouth to feed was another child, she'd get over £60 per week extra in CHB & CTC, but because it's another adult she gets nothing.

The system is hugely biased against 2-parents families and towards single parents. Yet whenever any change appears to benefit 2 parents familes you get screaming headlines that single mothers are being victimised! Even on MSE!

As you seem to question the fact that you have to financially support your partner.

That is what couples do or I thought they were suppose to do. Happy to sleep together but not share their money.

You have to financially support your children too. Does that mean anyone who asks about CTC isn't committed to their child? This is a benefits board, people ask about benefits entitlement. That's the point of it.

It's temporary though. Think how much better off you will be when you have a second income coming in. An extra child in the household is not able to provide any income and is therefore supported. I do agree that 2 parent families should be encouraged not discouraged as they are now. You will also need to pay more council tax when a second adult moves in.

But when he starts working (if he does) her CTC & WTC will be reduced. Whereas if was still at his Mum's they wouldn't.

Something really does need to be done about this - the likes of Frank Field have pointed it out before, and the Tories promised to address the bias against couples, but nothing has been done.

No wonder the UK has more single parent families than any other EU country.

I agree but the OP only decribes her WTC as a small amount so hopefully his wage will still make a considerable difference once he is working.

if you think the system is ibased against 2 parent families, then spare a thought for childless couples and singletons...................they get nothing unless they are almost destitue!

    the pecking order is...........
    single parent, non working
    single parents, working
    couples with kids
    couples with no kids
    single people

the latter 2 lag way behind all the others.

Erm, this thread is about a single man who is getting JSA. Supposedly bottom in your list. If he moves in with his girlfriend, and becomes a couple with kids, he will lose his benefits.

Single people are able to claim benefits without having someone else's income considered. They are not bottom of this list as the OPs example proves.

Once the WTC goes his wage will eat into her CTC.

i don't understand why you think it's unfair for people to support themselves instead of relying on benefit.

if people are better off with benefits, it doesnt necessarily nean that the system isnt giving them enough. it could just mean, that at the moment, the system gives too much!
