A friend who works as a temp sales negoitator told me today he is covering a site in surrey which has lots of three storey townhouses, the stair cases are such that they are unable to get the sofa up the stairs into the living room...anyone else had this problem with a new home .

not personally, but seen it covered before in watchdog type consumer programmes. I can't remember who the offending companies were though.

I have heard of this happening. Wait for a few more years when someone wants the bathroom "re-doing", you can be sure they took the bath upstairs before they finished the joinery work

  • I have that problem with my house in the UK - you can't get large furniture (including a divan bed) up the stairs. It's not new - it's 150 years old next year! - a Victorian mid-terrace.

I bless the day IKEA came to the UK. Flat-Pack Rules OK!

I have that problem with a property that was bought from Fairclough Homes (now part of Miller Homes, I think). Had to furnish it with flatpack furniture in the end.

Also, seen it featured on Watchdog a few years ago.

Hold on a sec, Terrierlady, are you not one of the directors for one of these new home developers........:D :D

An upside to the 'obesity crisis' at last! Developers will have to put in wider staircases or have to write off 50% of their potential market.

We had tenants move out of our townhouse into another one. They couldn't get their sofas up the stairs in the new house.

  • We were until very recently due to move into a newish (2yr old) 3 storey house. All the removals companies showed concern over this about getting large furniture up and around the return in the staircases. We were going to be lucky with the lounge on the ground floor though. It appears it is to do with the 'return' and not the width - the way the staircase above is shaped is the problem and you don't have the usual all around space. They were of the opinion that is a major problem with all developers now - they won't give you any more space than legally required.

yes I am, but we don't do town houses just traditional homes. It made me think about how the market is changing and also go today to look around other developers sites and measure up the furniture ie three quarter beds instead of double or king size like most real people have....

I was going to ask about that in my post - whether it was true that they used smaller furniture in show homes to make their rooms look bigger!
