Best options for holiday money

I'm going to France at the end of July and have a budget of 500 pounds (sorry the symbol doesnt work on this keyboard) for spending money and to cover meals for 2 adults and 2 children. What are the best options for changing this into euros?
Should I withdraw cash in UK and exchange before I leave?-with the risk of losing it- and if so where is the best place for exchange e.g bank/post office etc.
Or is it better to keep the money in the account and withdraw in France or use debit card? ( do they have chip and pin in france?) if so which bank charges least- funds are currently in a barclays account but can be transfered to halifax or santander if they are better. I don't have any credit cards and I'm unlikely to qualify or recieve them in time anyway.

Thanks for any advise on this matter and I hope it makes sense :)
