I thought it meant, Westward from Kenton?

I think that's stretching the meaning of the words to breaking point, whereas a little poetic licence is just fine by me. He was not writing a travelogue.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

As others have said the top of harrow on the hill is lovely. However chances are the properties you have seen are at the bottom of the hill near the Tube Station, St Georges or St Anns shopping centres.

Harrow has some unique problems. In April and May when there are football matches on at Wembley, Harrow plays host to the fans that have travelled down for the weekend. That's 3 play off finals, 2 fa cup semi's and one fa cup final plus england games and lower leagues cup finals.

The bars and pubs have a bad rep and there always seems to be trouble.

You are lucky if the Met line runs every other weekend.

The traffic is bad at Christmas due to the shopping centres.

Plus sides are great bus routes, great train (when running) lots of nice Indian restaurants, shops, 12 mins on the Chilton line to London.

I much prefer pinner, eastcote, ruislip. northwood but of course these places cost more but have the open spaces. Northolt and south ruislip are cheaper but again they are not to everones taste.

    I'd avoid Rayners Lane

    Lily,

I can't offer you any advice about Harrow but I do need to tell you I love the way you write. Have you by any chance seen the film "Happy go lucky"?

I suppose all areas have their pros and cons, unless you're a rich oligarch with caviar coming out of your taps.

From the comments, I get the impression that Harrow-on-the-Hill is perceived as being a rose in a bed of thorns, not that I would describe it in such a way. It's not where you live, it's how you live!

My friend has an interview in the Harrow area, and Arnos Grove I think. Might update if and when he gets a job. I'm usually quite good at finding properties for friends, but I don't know these areas, despite having family in Muswell Hill (latte-quaffing abounds).

Just to throw it out there, my friend said he wants a 2-bed rental property (which he'll split with his GF and maybe +1) for "no more than £1,200 per month". I don't know if he's living in cloudcuckooland on a teacher's wage, but that's his plan. Any suggestions welcome.

Haven't seen the film but I'll take it as a compliment!

Its the Chiltern line (Chiltern Railways), cuts through the Chilterns AONB.
