harrow on the hill proper is very expensive, harrow town center and surrounding areas is a sheethole, i grew up and lived in harrow and its a real dump now, but it does boast a loverly new shiney mosque which should make your friend fit in well the locals if he happens to be a muslim, i live in watford now and although only ten miles away from harrow i still avoid it like the plague , bushey is much nicer and pinner also has some very nice areas, although the trian goes to chorleywood and amersham/rickmansworth from harrow met this is the line that is usually reported on the news every morning as having delays and cancellations, hatch end is quite nice, south oxhey is the place i would go if i wanted to find some bnp supporters , watford is ok if you avoid west watford where the football ground and hospital is(unless your a smack or crack addict) , i would suggest hatch end, pinner or bushey for a latte quaffing lifestyle, and harrow on the hill proper if you can afford it, stanmore is also latte quaffing territory near the town center although there are a few rough estates as you get further away0

Most London boroughs have their good and bad parts/points some of the posts here are so judgemental in writing off whole areas as 'dumps or naff' , I live in a part of West London that most would consider rubbish , yet am surrounded by quiet streets , parks and fields we even have a couple of farms within 10min walk.. so go see these places before you let people put you off them because they had a bad experience/view#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

Avoid South Oxhey like the plague. Sh*thole would be doing it too great a justice. tanith has a point about not writing off whole areas but SO has very little good to it.
Bucks is nice enough, with a reasonable commute into London on the Met line and plenty of decent state and grammar schools. Expensive though.urs sinserly,

my post was not based on a bad experience or view, it was based on living in harrow/watford for nearly 40 years , some my friends and family also live in harrow and have done for 40 years, if personal experience is worthless in your view i wonder what info you would use? i dont think it is really practical to suggest the op visits every are and stays in each for a week in order to judge the situation, do you?0 -

I don't suggest he visits every area just ones that appeal to him.. everyone has their own expectations of places they want to live and obviously they differ , just because you think a place is not suitable doesn't mean that hundreds of others do or they clearly wouldn't live there... I also live a stones throw from Harrow and have for a similar amount of time as you did but I find bad parts and ok parts as I do in my own Borough of Ealing..#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

Hang on a sec. I wouldn't regard Ealing as being "a part of West London that most would consider rubbish".No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0

It would be if it was actually Acton rather than leafy Ealing Common0

As stated in my original post there are parts of every Borough that some would consider rubbish...#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

"There's a storm cloud to the westward over Kenton"
You have to love that line. Ofc, Kenton is East of Harrow, but Eastwards doesn't work as well as Westwards in that line.
I thought it meant, Westward from Kenton?...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Anyway, back to the OP: I think your friend should wait and see what offer/s he gets and then sorts out the areas he wants to consider living according to the transport links to and from the school0
