eon-failed to make collections

hello I am new to this and want to ask advice. I have my electricity and gas provided by eon. It has just come to light that they have over the cousre of the last ten months failed to take money via direct debit from my account for the gas I have been using. I have a letter from them saying that I need do nothing as they will collect the money. I am now in the situation of owing them in excess of £500. I know I have been a bit scatty not nioticing (I have in effect only been paying for my electricity during this time) but feel thay are to blaim. However aI can get nowhere with them and they want me to pay over £130 a month, which I can't afford. Any ideas anyone?

Not quite sure why you're complaining, as you've effectively had a 10 month interest free loan from them of £50pm?
If the debt has taken 10 months to accumulate though, it's not unreasonable to ask for the repayments to be made on the same timescale-however remember that your DD will still have to be set at a level that covers your ongoing consumption as well.

  • but it wasn't a loan i wanted from them - it was for them to collect each month payment for energy I was using-which they have failed to do in a very inefficient way. Just wonder if ayone else has expereince of this sort of thing and how you resolved it? I am not in a position to pay what they are asking. Thanks

As macman says ask to pay it back over the next 10 months. You failed to notice you weren't paying for your gas so you are partially to blame

As a slightly less harsh response than Dave, they have made a bit of a muck up. Especially if they sent you a letter stating that it will be taken by DD. Yes, you should have noticed that it wasn't coming out, but they should also have set it up if they said they were going to.

You are going to have to pay it, but if you complain then as macman says they should be able to spread the payments out over a longer period and you may get something off of it as a goodwill gesture as well...

I don't understand quite how you want to 'resolve' it? If you think you are going to get more than a token discount, then you're not. They are perfectly entitled to collect the debt owing for the gas used. The only issue is for you to negotiate a longer term for repayment. What is the level of DD that would cover your ongoing consumption? Your DD should be at that level plus a tenth of the debt, i.e +£50pm.
If you didn't notice an extra 50pm in your account, will you notice £50 less?

I don't know how you can say you never paid for your gas?

Eon only take one direct debit a month from me and use it to pay both the gas and electricity, i.e. gas and electricity combined £300, payments by DD £300, bill zero.

    Or is my bill special?

deleted as cant be bothered with aggro
  • they assigned me 2 different account numbers with 2 different DD's. the electricity one has been running since I switched to them but I discovered the other day that they have never collected the money for the second account, even though they sent me the 'you need do nothing' letter.........Is there anyone who this has happened to? I didn't come here for snide comments but for help. I have a disabled son and am paying off debts and a mortgage from quite a small income, so if you don't want to help, then don't post!

I was about to post the same.

They were probably not being billed for the gas. What is of more concern is that the op has seemingly not read their bills or checked the meter for 10 months
