This is a follow up for advice on this past thread as my pc now wont boot up :( I backed up what i needed onto the spare 500gb hard drive which all went fine.

I called Dell this morning after following some checks on there site and they want a charge of £29 to run an over the phone diagnostics then whatever for parts and then more for an engineer to call out and fix it?????? when the website says £19 and no fix no fee diagnostic so im here to see if anyone could possibly help first please.

When i power on the unit (dell vostro 400) the power button flashes amber the changes to blue and stays blue you can hear 3 or 4 bleeps then it boots to the dell screen with the bios 1.0.11 with f2 and f12 in the top right hand corner and the white intel sign bottom right side and thats it stops there.

Any help please or should i just go straight to dell? Also does it need dto be dell part to replace as I noticed the operating system says it will only work on a dell pc so does that mean ive to stick with dell parts?

From your manual 3 beeps is a motherboard failure and 4 beeps is a RAM failure so it's important to distinguish exactly what you hear. Check again.

The decode for that is a BIOS checksum failure. You can try clear CMOS and remove/reinsert RTC battery. If you don't understand that, post back and I'll explain.

    Which is your operating system?

NOTE: It is normal for the system to emit a single beep during the boot routine. If the boot routine completes successfully, this single beep is not considered a beep code.

Can you get into Dell Diagnostics by pressing F12 as soon as the Dell logo appears?

    I'm assuming 32bit.

Unplug any USB connection, make sure that the drive is recognised in the BIOS and that the boot order is set correctly.

If after you have checked all of that, it still doesn't boot, follow these instructions:
You will need to enter System Restore from the Vista Windows Recovery Environment. You 'll need a disc in that instance.

Follow these instructions in order to create one:
Download and save this Vista Recovery Disc Image to a working computer.
Next, download and install ImgBurn(No need to install the Google Toolbar. Remove the relevant tick). Burn the Image to Disc. Use this guide(skip step 2b)

Set your PC to boot from the optical disc drive and then follow the instructions within the System Restore from the Vista Windows Recovery Environment link.
