When is a small double 4' bed not a 4' small double bed?

Thank you for all your advice and feedback.
Yes, I did realize that the frame would be larger than the mattress...but 10"? We actually allowed about 2" either side!
I spoke to their "customer services" until I was blue in the face. I think it was a case that they had my money so they couldn't care less.
I did speak to Trading standards and they believed that I would have a very strong case if it went to court.
I suppose -and I know this is wrong- I just can't be bothered for the sake of all the fuss and hassle it is much easier to get a carpenter to cut the bed down...I know, I know!
Mattressman have won. Well done them. Just be warned.
Thanks again

Before you go to the expense of paying a carpenter to cut the base down (which could be more expensive than buying a new base), you need to measure the space where the mattress goes. If it will fit a 4'6" wide mattress then they have sent the wrong base, and they must take it back.
Another thing to consider is, how big is the gap that the bed has to fit in? Most bedsteads will be bigger than the mattress, and it may not be possible to cut the base down enough to fit the gap.
If they have sent you a 4'6" base, then call them back, and ask to speak to a manager, as they would be more likely to have the authority todo an exchange. Then you could go for a divan base. If they still won't budge then send them a letter, quite clearly stating that you are sending a copy to trading standards. Trading standards will be able to advise you on the content of the letter.
You should still be able to win this one......good luck.0 -

What will you do if the bed develops a fault later on?The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0 -

Yes, they know it's a 4'6" frame...which as I said they believe is "within tolerance" It fits a 4' mattress! As I tried to explain to them, it would also fit a 3' mattress . Does that come within tolerance too? They wouldn't play with that idea...
The thing is what I want is a usable bed, which I will get when it is cut down. What I don't want is is a long running battle.
Thanks for your feedback.0 -

A 4'6" and a 4' are different size beds, and are NOT within tollerences as they put it. A 4' mattress used on a 4'6" slatted base could actually cause a safety hazard, as it leaves a 6" gap where a child could get a limb stuck between the slats.
Speak to a manager and explain this.
One of the reasons why the bed has failed is possible because the mattress isn't spreading the weight out right to the edges, where the slats are supported, and are therefore stronger.0 -
I hate mattressman with a vengence and why????
I intend to spend the rest of my life LMAOtelling people all about my experience with mattressman.co.uk
ordered a double mattress in early May... it arrived.. how on earth one is supposed to check it front of the driver who wants to get away I dont know, so a quick check and all is good... or was it...
the mattress is too small so.. massive gaps either side of my double base and it was too short... so telephoned mattressman and guess what they told us? they told us that the mattress will fill out cus its stored on its side and to give it FOURTEEN days and then get back to them... off course without realising the FOURTEEN days took us outside our right to demand a replacement or refund... anyway everyday for 2 weeks we turned the mattress like reccomended and then telephoned them... because it is still to small in width and length only this time the springs are making a noise... then we are told we have to give it THREE MONTHS to settle... in otherwords when the 3 months is up they will get someone in the trade to call and say that there is nothing wrong with the mattress blah blah bloody blah... so we paid 600 quid for a load of cack arghhhhhhhhhhhhh
AVOID MATTRESSMAN IS MY ADVICE CUS IF THEY SEND YOU A CRAPPER THEY WILL NOT TAKE IT BACK... GITS.
Years ago people took pride in customer service, I think we have been completely and utterly ripped off... our 3 months is almost up and guess what.. the mattress is still short in both length and width plus now the stitching is coming apart and rust marks are appearing at the seams.... ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH WILL THEY DO ANYTHING???...will they hell.. they will play the game and keep my money knowing there is not much I can do.. mattressman makes me sick...
go to a shop and do you and your partner a favour... my life has been hell because of the lack of sleep my wife has lost.
please dont reply telling me my rights I am fully aware of them and so is mattressman... if you recieve your order from them and its not right INSIST THEY DO SOMETHING WITHIN THE FIRST 7 DAYS... after that your screwed.
stuff mattressman.co.uk... absolute joke.. sorry but i have lost 600 quid.. if they think i am going to be quiet they are in for a shock.. shall be ringing them early next month and will update about the next stage... bet they dont do a thing..blah blah blah..send out littleman with tapemeasure who will LIE...about the mattress...
by the way my so called double mattress is 4ft.3" and well short cant be bothered to go get the tape out... so the excuse given to the OP is an excuse because our so called standard double is actually smaller than what they say is there small double according to the answer they gave the OP... AVOID MATTRESSMAN.CO.UK LIKE THE PLAGUE.. robbing gits.. off course if they say they will replace I will take everything i have said above back... but they wont.... if you do buy then prepare the driver by telling you are not signing untill it has been examined properly and anything wrong he takes it back.. if it takes an hour it takes an hour... I lost 600 quid because I believed the cack they spouted on the phone the day it arrived.. more fool me I know.. they deliberately took me outside my 7 days rights.. devious or what?0 -
Any suggestions?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Richard

So what was the point of your post, or I have missed something. You asked for advice and have been given it, trading standards have said you have a strong case but your not going to bother pursuing it. If that was the case why bother asking here and trading standards??
Really you should follow this through not only for your benefit but others that will follow and use this company.Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0 -

In which case you would have a prima facie case against them at the small claims court. If you paid by credit card, you can make a claim against your card provider, using section seventy-five of the consumer credit act.The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark0
