PAYG internet for Rome?

I’m going to Rome in a couple of weeks, and the apartment where we’re staying doesn’t have internet access. I’ve looked into ‘free’ Rome wi-fi spots, but it looks too complicated with needing to buy an expensive sim card, having to register it on the phone, and fill out an online form in Italian. (My Italian is non-existent).
My second option was to look at Vodafone’s pay as you go dongle, because I’ll only need to use it for about a week, maybe a little more. To use it with my laptop would cost around £8/day according to their website, and the limit is 100mb/day. Another alternative is to buy a sim card for my phone and tether it to my laptop, but I have no idea whether this would work out cheaper or whether it would use my allowance up much faster (it’s £2/day for phones).
Another option is to find an internet caf! with wi-fi or just a food/drink place with free wi-fi, but our location isn’t very central, and I’m uncomfortable with travelling anywhere on my own whilst my friend attends a conference for a few days.
Anyone ever roamed in Europe with Vodafone using a pay as you go dongle? Or anyone offer another solution/better provider?
Money isn’t a massive factor, but I don’t want to pay hugely ridiculous amounts. £8/day seems ok…I know I’m gambling on the fact on there being 3G signal, but I haven’t lost anything if I can’t use it.

I use 3 Italia. You should have no trouble finding a shop in Rome, they will sell you a dongle (chiavetta) with sim for €19 (they may have better deals). You can then load the sim - go to http://www#tre#it/opzioni/internet-con-chiavetta (change # to .)for options(SuperWeb.Week would be ideal for you as you would get 1 week access for a total of €22 ). The 3 Shop will be able to do this for you.
You should have no problem with 3G signal0 -
