Moben in administration

I would say it is Rent 1/4 Day and they have tried going as long as they can.
Lets face it pay up front for a kitchen and wait Months is never going to be a winner in a recession.
Not when there are less riskier cheaper options (B&Q Hombase etc) available.
In our last house we got Homebase to design the kitchen ordered the stuff and got a local chippy to fit it.
Cost less than £5K all in (I think it was less than £4K TBH) when the people like moben wanted £10K+.
What should be noted is that B&Q have done OK of late, so it seems that the problem was more deep routed than just the hosing market.
Did they use batter to join the seals between the worktops?0 -

When I recenty re-done my kitchen, It cost me 2.4k including new colour coded cooker, exc other appliances.
I did it with my sisters bf who is a joiner/carpenter by trade, and that was with Cooke Lewis frontage (end of line £200 total inc 23 door unit packs £5 each 9m of cornice, pelmets, and Plinths. I am a great deal hunter ;-D lol), 13 x betterkitchens.co.uk 18mm units, upgraded with Blum soft close everything. (13 quality colour coded units in total) and Solid Oak Worktops (7m worth). Tiles cost 150. It was a lot of work, and a lot of fun, but I just Laugh when people mention 17k kitchens, absolutely outrageous. They will get bored of the Graphite/composite worktops before they wear out. lol
You can do it on a budget if you have someone in the know to help, but in reality the kitchen is amazing, and it feels great doing it yourself (with help), and knowing how its been put together. Means so much more than looking nice. And knowing its been done properly, and will last!Plan

why? because a company that sold an overpriced product that had poor customer service has gone into administration.
that would happen in a good economic climate and even a bad one.
I have to agree 100% with what you are saying.
They have, for many years, tried to be something which they aren't and have then failed to back-up what they are trying to be.
Their customer service is shocking, you only have to look thorugh MSE and you will find a lot of people saying this. They haven't adapted their business to deal with the current economic climate and they have fatally underestimated their rivals...just like MFI did, but on a much smaller scale.
If this was a reflection of the current state of affairs, then there would be much bigger players in the market in trouble (I should know, I work for one of them and no real problems here) I do however feel for the people who are potentially going to be laid-offIf it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Well you need to know your trades man slang or they will rip you off.;)
I think you have to know a few traders (builders, chippy's, plasterers etc) or otherwise you are held to ransome by people like moben.
That is true. I'm just about to buy a kitchen, probably from B&Q. I have my own builder to do most of the work, but I just want to get a quote from them for doing it all, so I can roll around laughing :rotfl:0 -

People who would otherwise move are instead improving / extending; just look at B&Q - sell what people want at the right price and you'l stay in business. I'd say this is more to do with millions of people trying to repay the mountains of personal debt that kept businesses and products like this in business during the boom years. Sadly for Moben, that takes time.0 -

Care to define "these types of businesses"??If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

that's not really true is it...The Kingfisher group, which owns the B&Q DIY chain as well as several others in various countries, has announced a 22.5% leap in profits for the year to the end of January.
Operating 856 outlets in total, the firm said it has scope to increase its number of shops to around 1,100.Total sales for the 13 weeks to the end of April rose by 3.3% to £2.73bn compared with a year earlier.
The group said higher sales and improved margins also helped to increase profits.
you're getting confused by the usual forumonics that anything to do with property is doing badly. it's not, well run businesses do well, badly run businesses don't do so well. it's quite simple.0 -

I'd love to know what figures you are basing this assumption on. It's not effecting ALL companies you know. Some have actually seen an increase in profits.
Sure it's not exactly a rose garden out there. But the businesses with the right marketing strategies, product mix and business plans are still thriving...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands
