Flights to Auckland, book later for lower prices?

I want to travel to Auckland from the start of November for 3 weeks.

The prices I'm getting so far are about 900-1000.

Around xmas last year I looked for flights in March and was finding prices around 700. But after ringing one London based company was offered flights for about 550 - a cracking deal and the company was listed with ATOL though I was still a bit suspicious (should I have been?) The guy gave me about £100 discount as he wanted me to book it the same day. I think by the time I was looking for this flight it might have been about 1 month before I was planning to leave.

Anyway I'm wondering of some fares get cheaper as you get to within 1-2 month of departure? This seemed like the case the last time I was planning to go but seems like a bit of a gamble if the prices actually double??

Any thoughts/info - is my travel agent right the flights will only ever get more expensive?

Also is £900 likely to be the lowest price I will get (despite the £550 offer from March )

Shame I can't find the number or name of the company that gave me the offer in March.

Buy now, fares will only go up. At the moment only Cathay Pacific seem to have fares below £1000 and fares increase with other airlines to above £1200 for a random departure date of 1st November returning thre weeks later. Be suspicious of anyone offering £100 off to book then, there simply isn't that level of profit to give away. Either they were about to go bust and wanted your money before they did, or you would have had another call a month before departure to tell you the fare had gone up and by then all the alternative fares would have been higher still

Flights everywhere are a lot more expensive than last year. If you can get away with paying 20% more then you are doing OK.

Rule of thumb is that as a flight gets more & more booked up, prices go upwards. However, there are always exceptions, and sometimes an airline might have a seat sale on, or some other special offers - however this is never gauranteed to happen. If you wait you may get lucky and get a seat sale fare of £700 - £900, however if you are unlucky, fares may rocket to £1500+.
