I have had mixed results using mine so far. One McDonalds near us does not seem to able to accept it - their chip n pin machine in the drive-thru does not display the contactless logo (despite posters and banners everywhere advertising that they now accept contactless). All other branches of McDonalds I have visited seem to be fine and I have not used chip n pin at any other branch for quite a while. Caffe Nero have seperate contactless readers so I used that and after waiting a moment was told it was offline, would I mind just popping the card into the chip n pin reader as usual.

I think it will be fine once everyone is used to it, but at the moment it doesn't look like anywhere has trained their staff on how to use this new technology - they just installed it.
  • The only two times I have used contactless payment is at McDonalds and both times the machine requested a security check and to had to use Chip and Pin... not that impressed with it this far lol!

if anything it takes more time as the staff have no clue, never got it working yet, and one mcd's till crashed trying to use it.

    No problem with Nero.

Have used this system in the far east for a few years. Really fast and convenient. Much faster than cash once both sides have the hang of it.

Not really on topic, but I don't think a big overhaul to contactless is really necessary - you can achieve the same thing through existing chip and pin machines. All they need to do is change the software so when you put the card in it just processes automatically instead of asking for a pin etc.

That way they could roll it out everywhere nationwide and everyone will be able to use it, as opposed to this where not many people have the relevant cards and you can't use them in the majority of places.

It does take a few seconds to put a card into a slot and have the chip read whereas RFID is instant (well milliseconds).

Not sure if you could access the chip for a transaction without entering a PIN.
  • It will take time to catch on as with all new technology from stores installing it to staff knowing how to use it properly.

In Pret and Boots use it all the time and no problems to date with the technology. In the early days a few staff didnt know how it worked seemingly as they were insistent on using the C&P device (they have separate devices for the different techs). Receipts are certainly available though for some reason with Pret they are automatic for C&P but on request for contactless.

Have only used it once in McDs but had no problem.

I am much more looking forward to the day that all these technologies can be merged so you get just one card that works for small payments, as an oystercard that is accepted on the u/ground, trains, buses etc rather than having to mess about with all of them.

Not so sure about the idea of nearfield communications in mobiles, could hold by card details in it but is it really easier than having a couple of cards?
