My husband catches lots of fish, when he guts them they all have hundreds of worms in them,he just scrapes them out, washes the fish and then freezes them,I think thats why fish are gutted straight away so the parasites dont cause any problems for humans.
It also applies to other animals, beef, lamb or pork a lot of them have worms.

These are cod worms, I haven't eaten cod since I found out about them two or three years ago. Cod is a dirty "bottom feeder" so tends to get these worms. If you google "cod worm" in google images you'll see loads of them. We eat haddock now! (I bet someone replies to let me know that haddock have worms too!)

  • All fish have parasites in them, its unavoidable unless you have fish bred in sterile water. As a zoology student I've disected many a fish....you want to see them under a high powered microscope. But if you think thats bad take a look at a cut of meat under the microscope....its enough to turn you veggie but then theres all those bugs in soil or worse still all those pesticides :rotfl:
  • I'd like to say I was grateful, but I'm not - there's something so comforting about complete ignorance :-) :-)

    Thanks for all your replies.

Is the fish ok to eat when you see them? I got them out of the fish and still used it (the fish not the worms!!).

As a zoology student I spend an enjoyable () afternoon dissecting parasitic worms from sheep intestines. The insides were absolutely stuffed full of massively long parasitic worms (our lab tecs had taken a trip down to the local abbatoir) and this is just normal.

    [shudders just thinking about it]

    (Yes I'm veggie).
