Hope someone can help on this...
My friend has been refused every bank account on the high street. They have even been refused a savings account.
Went to experian and obtained a credit report. Nothing shows up as odd and everything seems fine. HSBC reckon theres a note saying 'money laundering threat' Or something along those lines. Went back to experian and called them, guy on the phone said theres nothing on there credit report to suggest such a thing. Went on to say he doesnt see why everyone would refuse a bank account.
The only account they were able to open was a post office account.
The problem my friend has is, they have a cheque they need to pay in worth a fair few thousand from there solicitors. Without going to the rip off cheque cashing shops on the high street, what other options are there?
1.. Is there any bank or building society out there willing to accept them as a customer? any sort of special account as basic as possible is totally fine.
2.. Can you walk into HSBC(where the cheque originates from) and ask them to cash it in, providing them with I.D..ect.?

At the risk of stating the obvious, does the post office account not allow your friend to deposit cheques?
If not, try applying for a basic bank account. They aren't usually offered unless you specifically request them, as they don't make the banks much money!0 -
IMHO its best to ask for these accounts by name ie go into Nat West and ask for a Step Account. Here's a link to all the basic bank accounts on offer

In theory everyone should be able to open a basic bank account. The Cabbage

OK rather than looking at other accounts we really need to look at the issue at hand - which is a CIFAS marker.
Do a Subject Access Request from CIFAS to see the data they hold about your friend. There are details on the process here:
http://www.cifas.org.uk/find_out_if_cifas_other_data_registered
Look under section 2.
Once you have the data back from CIFAS, dispute it. You can also see which financial institution recorded the data with CIFAS - dispute the CIFAS marker(s) with the companies who logged them, too.
If your friend hasn't taken part in any fraudulent activities he / she has every right to have the information removed.
If however your friend has, every bank have the right to turn him / her away - it doesn't make any difference if your friend applies for basic or full current accounts, banks won't expose themselves to people with a history of fraud - end of.
Good luck! :beer:Cashback Earned ¦ Nectar Points £68 ¦ Natoinwide Select £62 ¦ Aqua Reward £100 ¦ Amex Platinum £48

It sounds more like someone does not have the correct ID.God save the King!

So why does your friend not open the Post Office account that was offered and deposite the cheque in that account? After it clears, they will have access to the money, will they not?0

Sounds like a fraud marker or similar."We want the finest wines available to humanity, we want them here, and we want them now!"0

So why does your friend not open the Post Office account that was offered and deposite the cheque in that account?
Because it is likely to be this account

What about using the cheque to open a National Savings Investment Passbook a/c? You will most probably have enough proof for that and they certainly will take a cheque payable to you as long as payments in are over 20 quid. They used to take a fortnight to clear a cheque and you have to apply to them for an order to withdraw the money at a Post Officee but it is better than giving your money away to a cheque cashing company.
I would then use the money you take out to buy a Passport and you can try and open a bank account with a debit card in branch as that is all the ID you need these days. They have a link to the Passport service to verify it is genuine and they find your address without ID using their computer system too.0
